Thus and so on was spoken. Regarding this meaning, in order to indicate the source of the Ratnavali, thus and so on was spoken. The saying, "Because that exists, this arises," means that if there is a cause, a result arises. These are not established by their own nature, because they are mutually dependent. To illustrate this, an example is given: For example, if there is long, then there is short. Thus and so on was spoken. Just as things are established here through mutual dependence, so it is in the same way. To refute the view that permanence is the cause, it was spoken thus: "Because this arises, this arises, for example." In the scriptures, it is said, that is, in the Root Wisdom. The saying, "Only these," refers only to the objects of cause and effect that are mutually dependent. "The agent depends on action," means that here, anything that does not depend on action is not the agent itself, so the agent that depends on action is the agent itself. Action cannot be action without depending on the agent, so it depends only on the agent. Therefore, action arises from the agent. Thus, action and agent are established in mutual dependence, and no other cause of establishment is seen. Since action and agent are established in mutual dependence, in order to show that it is the same for other things, thus and so on was spoken. The word "Thus" indicates that the action and agent just explained are merely imputed. The word "appropriation" indicates that because of appropriation, it is appropriation, which is what is to be explained. That is, it does not depend on the agent and taker who accomplish themselves, and the object to be appropriated. The object to be appropriated and the appropriator, like action and agent, are established in mutual dependence, and not by their own nature. Why is it not by its own nature? Because the action and agent are to be eliminated. The word "eliminate" means to abandon. Therefore, the meaning here is that for whatever reason I answer the agent and action, it should also be understood that the appropriator and the object to be appropriated are also refuted for the same reason. Because they are established in mutual dependence.

To show that it is not only the agent and the action that are prevented, but that there are others as well, it is said: 'By the agent and the action, one should know the remaining things.' Having said this, 'by the wise' is the remainder of the sentence. Apart from the action and the agent, the proximate taker and the proximate to be taken, whatever other things arise, and what is to be arisen, and the goer, and the going, and what is to be seen, and the seeing, and the characteristic, and what has the characteristic, likewise, the parts and the qualities and what has the qualities and the measure and what is to be measured, etc., all those things, the action and the agent, by way of analysis, having prevented the very existence by nature, the wise should realize that they are established in dependence on each other. Like this, in order to show the qualities of accepting dependent arising, therefore it is said, 'only this condition,' etc. 'Only this condition' means that because this exists, this arises, only this much. 'Arising, etc.' The word 'etc.' includes arising from self, etc. 'Permanent' means without interruption. 'Solid' means without arising and ceasing. 'Two, etc.' The word 'etc.' includes having self and not having self, etc. Because things, etc. Because these thoughts cannot be examined, 'these thoughts cannot be examined' means the thoughts of permanence, etc. If things had self-nature, then thoughts would arise, but because dependent arising itself does not have the self-nature of things, where would the thoughts of permanence, etc., arise? 'By this reasoning of dependent arising' means that dependent arising itself is the reasoning. 'Net of bad views' means the nets of views of permanence, etc. In order to show it by explanation, it is said, 'For what reason,' etc. 'Therefore, not other' means not artificial, not not dependent on others.

If asked, how to transform? The answer is: Like this, it is said, "dependent origination" and so on. As it is said, etc., is what the teacher Nagarjuna said. That and that which arises in dependence, etc., means that relying on the cause and condition of the dharma, the sprouts and so on that arise in dependence are not born of their own nature, because they have no self-nature, because self-nature has non-artificiality and so on. Whatever is not born of its own nature, how can it be said to be born? Because there is no self-nature. Therefore, because there is no self-nature birth, it can cut off the net of all evil views. In order to show the source of the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way, therefore, it is said "Thus" and so on. Whatever is dependently originated, that is, the arising of sprouts and consciousness, etc., which depend on cause and condition, is not born of its own nature, whatever is not born of its own nature is emptiness, because what is born of conditions has no self-nature. If it is said to be emptiness, then that is the imputation established as a cause, just as the wheels and so on rely on the parts of the chariot and are called a chariot. That which is established relying on its own parts is not born of its own nature, and whatever is not born of its own nature is emptiness. Emptiness, which has the characteristic of not being born of its own nature, is called the Middle Way, because it is not born of its own nature, so there is no existence, and it is not born of its own nature, so there is no destruction, therefore it is free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Emptiness, which has the characteristic of not being born of its own nature, is called the Middle Way. Therefore, only emptiness is dependent origination, emptiness and the imputation as a cause, and the Middle Way, these are all different names. In order to show the sutra source of this meaning, therefore, it is said "Also in the sutra" and so on. Whatever is born from conditions, that is unborn, why? Because that has birth
