The unfavorable side and, the antidote arisen and not arisen. Among these, the first object is, the unfavorable side has arisen, thereby, in order to abandon the sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen, aspiration arises. The second object is, the unfavorable side has not arisen, thereby, in order to prevent the sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen from arising, aspiration is generated. The third object is, the antidote dharma has not arisen, thereby, in order to generate the virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, aspiration is generated. The fourth object is, the antidote dharmas have arisen, thereby, in order to increase the virtuous dharmas that have arisen, aspiration is generated. The essence is diligence. The companions are the mind and mental factors that are concordant with diligence. The cultivation is generating aspiration, striving, initiating diligence, focusing the mind, and properly establishing, that is to say, with words such as generating aspiration, the cultivation of diligence with its basis is expressed. Among these, the basis of diligence is aspiration, because diligence is that which has aspiration as its antecedent. Striving is whatever is the abiding and focusing and, attending to the characteristics of equanimity. When, by attending to the characteristics of abiding and, focusing and, equanimity, one cultivates the antidote free from faults, at that time it is called striving. Thus, when one cultivates vipassanā and wisdom becomes superior, at that time, because the part of abiding is small, like a lamp in the wind the mind is extremely agitated, therefore one cannot clearly see reality as it is, at that time one attends to the characteristics of abiding. When abiding is increased, like a person falling asleep one cannot clearly see reality, at that time one attends to the characteristics of focusing. When abiding and vipassanā are the activity of their own nature, at that time one attends to the characteristics of equanimity. Thus, cultivating the antidote is called striving. Whatever is initiated for the purpose of dispelling sinking and excitement is called initiating diligence, thus, when the afflictions of near-sinking arise

Because in order to eliminate that, the cause of generating faith, such as the Buddha's image, is kept in mind, thereby elevating the mind's strength; if near-afflictive excitement arises, the objects that generate aversion to samsara are kept in mind, then the mind is held by way of gathering it inward, at that time it is called initiating diligence. For that very reason, it is said that in order not to abandon the means of abandoning sinking and excitement, one should thoroughly hold the mind and properly settle it. The result is that all unfavorable aspects diminish, and favorable aspects are obtained and increase. Among them, the result of the first and second right abandonments is that all unfavorable aspects diminish. Because those can thoroughly abandon the sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen and have not arisen. The result of the third is obtaining favorable aspects, therefore it generates the virtuous dharmas that have not arisen. The result of the fourth is the increase of favorable aspects, therefore it makes the virtuous dharmas that have arisen grow. The third mind generation is that the miraculous feet should be meditated upon. Because having initiated diligence, the mind abides, becoming the nature of being able to accomplish all purposes, therefore after the right abandonment, the miraculous feet are meditated upon. Miraculous feet are the accomplishment of all purposes such as clairvoyance. Because it becomes the cause of that, it is the feet, namely the four concentrations. Those also have five divisions: object, essence, companion, meditation, and the result of meditation. The object of the miraculous feet is the accomplishment of concentration, thereby accomplishing the activities of miracles such as clairvoyance. The essence is the abiding of the mind, namely concentration. The companions are aspiration, diligence, mind, and investigation, as well as the mind and mental factors that are in accordance with those. Among them, the concentration of aspiration is that which touches the one-pointedness of mind based on what respectful application. Among them, respectful application is the application with extreme respect. The concentration of diligence is that which touches the one-pointedness of mind based on what continuous application.

, that which is always diligent and never without effort is called diligence. Mental equipoise is touching the one-pointedness of mind by relying on having cultivated equipoise before. Having cultivated equipoise in other previous lives, relying on the growth of its seed, the mind naturally becomes attuned to equipoise, therefore touching equipoise. Discerning equipoise is touching the one-pointedness of mind through the means of thoroughly distinguishing the Dharma by relying on the instructions of others. Cultivation is making the eight activities of abandonment familiar. The eight activities of abandonment are: desire, effort, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Because it is acting for the sake of abandonment, it is the activity of abandonment. What are these acting to abandon? The five faults. The five faults are: laziness, forgetting the instructions, sinking and excitement, non-application, and application. Among them, sinking and excitement have been explained before. Non-application is equanimity. Application is the mental activity of focusing on other objects. Among them, laziness is a fault during the stage of application, because it does not engage in application. During the stage of engaging in application, forgetting the instructions is a fault, because it will not cause the mind to remain evenly. During the stage of remaining evenly, sinking and excitement are faults, because they will not become workable. During sinking and excitement, non-application is a fault, because non-application will not counteract sinking and excitement, therefore sinking and excitement will not subside. During the subsidence of sinking and excitement, application is a fault, because having obtained the evenness of mind by being separated from sinking and excitement, it is called utter tranquility, and in such a case, applying the counteractive to sinking and excitement is a fault. These are the five faults. The arising of these five is for the sake of abandonment, therefore the eight activities of abandonment are distinguished. Thus, in order to abandon laziness, there must be desire, effort, faith, pliancy, and the activities of abandonment.
