In "From Accumulating Merit," it says that the path of the ten virtuous actions and generosity, etc., are the accumulations of merit. The wisdom arising from hearing, contemplating, and meditating is the accumulation of wisdom. To degenerate from these. "From these" refers to those who have accumulated sins and degenerated from the accumulations of merit and wisdom. The Bhagavan only taught the mind-only, and it should be understood in this way. Why did he teach it? The answer is: to destroy the afflictions that have form as their condition. The meaning is to destroy attachment, etc., which has form as its cause. An example is given, such as contemplating a skeleton to destroy attachment to external objects. Just as for those with attachment, the method of contemplating a skeleton is taught to destroy attachment to external objects. "Even if it is not like that" means even if it is not the nature of a skeleton. Therefore, this is not a scripture that negates form and establishes mind-only, but rather it is for abandoning attachment to form, etc. To show that this is the meaning of guiding the scriptures, it is said again, "Also this scripture," etc. "This" refers to "Whether external appearances exist or not," etc. Now, to show that other sutras that are in accordance with the mind-only practitioners are also of guiding meaning, it is said, "This sutra," etc. "This" refers to "Whether external appearances exist or not," etc. Furthermore, it refers to the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, etc. "Of the scripture" refers to "As to a sick person," etc. "The nature of non-discrimination" refers to the fact that in non-dual wisdom, the apprehended and the apprehender are completely non-existent. "Other-powered existence" refers to the fact that the consciousness that arises from causes and conditions, such as the appearance of blue, etc., exists. "Perfected existence" refers to the fact that in the consciousness that is empty of the apprehended and the apprehender, the emptiness of the apprehended and the apprehender exists. Thus, by showing other-powered existence, the meaning of mind-only is established.

Those who speak of Mind-Only say, "It exists as truly existent." To further demonstrate the scriptures that teach Mind-Only, it is said, "Thus," and so forth. The so-called "appropriating consciousness" is the appropriating consciousness because it appropriates all habitual imprints. The so-called "profound" is because it is difficult for children to understand. The so-called "subtle" is because it is difficult for the Shravakas to understand. "All seeds flow like a river." This means that just as when a great river swells, the river carries away many things such as trees, so too, the Alaya consciousness contains many habitual imprints, and so forth. Why was it not spoken to the Shravakas, and so forth? It is said, "Grasping as self," and so forth. This means that if the Alaya consciousness were taught to them, they would then completely grasp it as a self endowed with the qualities of an agent, and so forth, so it was not spoken. This refers to the two scriptures that demonstrate Mind-Only. The so-called "how" refers to how, just as a doctor understands the different conditions of a patient's wind, bile, and phlegm, and then prescribes different medicines according to the illness, so too, the Buddha, knowing the thoughts of sentient beings, teaches Mind-Only, which is spoken in accordance with the thoughts of sentient beings, but is not the ultimate truth. This is the conclusion. To further demonstrate other Sutras of definitive meaning, it is said, "Thus," and so forth. For example, the spoken Tathagatagarbha is of definitive meaning, and similarly, the spoken Mind-Only is also spoken for definitive meaning. The so-called Tathagatagarbha refers to the fact that the Sutra says that all sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha. The so-called "that" refers to the Tathagatagarbha. The so-called "naturally luminous" means naturally luminous, without defilement, and the purity that has that characteristic. The so-called "primordially pure" means without defilement from the beginning, like the sky. The so-called "endowed with the thirty-two marks" means that they are all of the nature of emptiness.
