Those eight are diseases, and through the gate of generating desire and hatred, they are the cause of suffering such as hell. They constantly harm sentient beings. Having shown the faults of the six realms in this way, in order to show the inverted fault of grasping the conventional truth as the ultimate truth, it is said, "To speak of the conventional as the ultimate." Whoever grasps the nature of the conventional truth as the ultimate truth should be known to possess erroneous wisdom. In order to show the nature of inverted grasping, it is said, "Impure," etc. To speak of what is impure as pure; to speak of what is suffering as happiness; to speak of what is without self as self; to speak of what is impermanent as permanent. Thus, "Joyful, abiding in signs," means that whoever is attached to happiness, etc., is abiding in signs. In order to show that they revile the Dharma with evil words, and thus will be born in the lower realms as a result, it is said, "Those," etc. "Those" refers to those who delight in signs. "If the words of the Tathagata are heard," means that if one hears the Blessed One Buddha say that phenomena are without self-nature and without arising, then one will fear selflessness and abandon the words of the Buddha. Why is this so? Because "not truly thinking," that is, not truly understanding emptiness, not understanding the meaning of being unborn from the beginning, one understands it in one's heart as the meaning of annihilation. "Improper" means through the gate of inversion, that is, the meaning of non-skillful means. "Seeking happiness" is the nature of higher realms and definite goodness. Having shown the conventional truth in this way, in order to show the ultimate truth through the gate of showing the result of those who truly understand the Dharma with non-inverted wisdom, it is said, "Benefiting the world," etc. "Non-inverted wisdom" is the knowledge of the difference between the conventional truth and the ultimate truth.

Therefore. The saying, "All these dharmas are empty of self-nature," means that all these dharmas are without self-nature. Why is this said? The answer to this is: because it is emptiness. The saying "with emptiness as its characteristic" means without cause. The so-called "ultimate truth" refers to that which is separated from the cause of selflessness and is inexpressible, which is the ultimate truth. After hearing such teachings, those who develop joy in what is taught will attain unsurpassed Bodhi through reflection and meditation. The saying "Thus" means seeing self-nature as empty. The so-called "city of the senses" refers to the collection of the senses. In order to show the conclusion, it is said "everything" etc., meaning that one sees that all things are without self-nature as they are. Having thus shown the difference between conventional truth and ultimate truth, in order to show that teaching conventional truth is a means, it is said "in this conventional" etc. The so-called "without letters" refers to being free from all expression. The so-called "dharma" refers to the dharma of realizing emptiness. The saying "Who hears and who speaks" means that for those who have transcended all expression, hearing and speaking are impossible. The saying "Imposing words on the unspeakable, yet hearing and speaking" means that although the ultimate truth is inexpressible, one mentally imposes words on emptiness, which is empty of self-nature, and thereby engages in hearing and speaking. The saying "Only in conventional truth" means only in conventional truth, otherwise, there would be no elaborations such as speaker and spoken. The saying "In the treatise" refers to the Root Wisdom Treatise. The saying "Without relying on the conventional" means that if one does not accept the elaborations of the characteristics of worldly knowledge, objects of knowledge, the speaker, and the spoken, one cannot teach the ultimate truth. If it is not taught, it cannot be understood; if the ultimate truth is not understood, one cannot attain the city of Nirvana. Therefore, it is certain that this is the method for attaining Nirvana, so one abides in conventional truth as it is.
