Etc. were spoken. The distinction of those who speak of Mind-Only is that they say, "Those who have not examined the Buddha's teachings." Whatever teachings the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has proclaimed, its intention is what is to be followed. To those who have not examined it, it is said that way. Therefore, (they) say, "Combined without the skill of wisdom." Furthermore, in order to establish the consciousness without an object, those who speak of Mind-Only said, "What is said here," etc. Then, when do yogis, from the oral instructions of the guru, see the earth filled with skeletons? When a man who engages in lust is given the instruction to meditate on ugliness by the guru, at that time, when that yogi meditates on ugliness, he sees the earth filled with skeletons all the way to the ocean, but those skeletons are not there. However, since the consciousness with skeletons as its object arises, is it established that consciousness without an object arises? In order to answer that, (he) said, "Explanation of the yogi's," etc., which is easy to understand. Saying, "That samadhi is to show the inverted attention," here samadhi is of two kinds: the nature of attending to reality as it is, and the nature of attending to what is not reality. Among them, meditating on emptiness, etc., is the nature of attending to reality as it is, because one meditates on things as they are. Meditating on ugliness, etc., is the nature of attending to what is not reality, because there are no skeletons, etc., in things. Therefore, (you) say, "Because there is no object, consciousness also does not exist," is a concluding statement. This should undoubtedly be admitted as such, which is precisely attending to what is not reality. If it is not so, then it is not attending to reality. In "Your autonomous intellect," etc., just as the eye consciousness, etc., has the aspects of form, etc., which you, the Mind-Only proponents, consider to exist, similarly, when meditating on ugliness, how can skeletons not be the object of the mind? Just like that,

The earth means like meditating on the impure. "Relying on that object" means relying on objects such as skeletons. "The other" means even those who do not meditate on the impure. "Can appear" means can appear as skeletons. "This is also not a delusion" means that the samadhi does not turn into non-realistic attention. In order to be shown by the commentary, "how" and so on are said. The so-called "arising of knowledge with that form" means the knowledge with the form of a skeleton. "Like knowledge of blue and other forms" means that just as when watching dramas and so on, knowledge of blue and other forms arises in common, so too for non-yogis, knowledge with the form of a skeleton will also arise. "Also does not turn into non-realistic attention" means that everything is distinguished by the form of a skeleton. In order to show that "likewise, there is no mind without an object for others," "likewise" and so on are said. Likewise, for the hungry ghosts in the flowing river, the thought of pus arises, and it should be known that this is like a person with cataracts seeing hair. In order to show the similarity with a person with cataracts, that is, "Whatever hair disorder is seen by the power of cataracts," etc., with words such as "whatever is said," etc., that is: "With what wisdom of the root with cataracts, whatever hairs are seen by the power of cataracts, that wisdom is true for both." It should be summarized as said before. The so-called "such kind" refers to the kind of wisdom of a person with cataracts. "Other" refers to the thought of pus, etc. of hungry ghosts. The meaning of this is that for all mistaken consciousnesses, because there is no object, none of the three arise. If it is determined by mistaken consciousness, then all three are true. If it depends on consciousness without error, then none of the three are true. "Enough with the elaboration" refers to the elaboration of establishing the existence of consciousness with and without an object, and refuting it.
