It is said to be like a dream. In order to show that sentient beings are also like this, it is said "like this" and so on. In short, sentient beings are the five types of beings. This is like a dream, therefore, there is no birth or death here, and so on. Why is that? Because it is said, "These dharmas are like bubbles and banana trees." If one observes and analyzes, one will find that it is like a banana tree, without substance. The so-called "will be well explained" means that if one admits that there is form included in the dharma-sphere in a dream, then it contradicts the example of a dream as stated in the sutras, but according to my view, there is no such contradiction. The reason why it is said that the three are not produced in the example of a dream is because it is relative to waking up, not relative to the time of the dream. In order to show this, it is said "therefore, waking up" and so on. The so-called "in a dream" and so on means that as long as one has not awakened from the state of dreaming, then the three exist. The so-called "how does this wake up" means that just as in the state of waking up, when one is asleep in the sleep of ignorance, the three exist, so it is also in the state of dreaming. In order to show this through explanation, it is said "just like not understanding" and so on, because all ordinary people are always in a thick sleep of ignorance. The so-called "awakening from that" means that even though one already possesses the sleep of ignorance, one awakens from that, another sleep with the characteristics of ordinary sleep. The so-called "by the sleep of ignorance" means that even though one has already awakened from the state of ordinary sleep, one has not yet separated from the sleep of ignorance. The so-called "similarly" means like the state of awakening from ordinary sleep. The so-called "having such a nature" means the same as the nature of the state of waking up. Now, in order to show that just as when one awakens from sleep with ordinary characteristics, the three that appear in the state of sleep do not exist, similarly, when one awakens from the sleep of ignorance, the three also do not exist.

It is said, "If awakened," and so on. "If awakened," and so on, is shown by example, while "sleep of ignorance" is shown by meaning. In order to be shown by the commentary, it is said, "How," and so on. "Also for those who realize the realm of phenomena," means also for those who realize emptiness. Furthermore, in order to prove that although external objects do not exist, consciousness does exist, the Mind-Only proponents said, "Then for those with cataracts," and so on. In order to answer that, it is said, "That is also unreasonable," and so on. "That also" refers to the fact that because those with cataracts perceive non-existent hairs, etc., they believe that there is consciousness without an object. "Why is that?" means what fault would there be if consciousness existed even without hairs, etc.? The answer to that is, it is said, "The sense faculty with cataracts," and so on. The eye with cataracts, by the power of the cataracts, whatever form of hair is seen by the consciousness, for the consciousness of the one with cataracts, both the hair and the consciousness are true, because he perceives it as true. For those who see clearly without cataracts, neither the consciousness nor the hair, etc., are true, because for him, there is no consciousness of hair, etc. In order to be shown by the commentary, it is said, "Like a mere dream," and so on. Just as in a dream both are true, and in the state of being awake neither arises, so too should it be understood here. In order to show it in detail, it is said, "Those with cataracts," and so on. In order to show the reason why both are true for those with cataracts, it is said, "Because it is certainly difficult to ascertain consciousness without an object." "Because consciousness without an object has not been seen" is the concluding statement. The meaning here is that one must not be eaten by demons, meaning one must certainly want to ascertain that there is no consciousness without an object. In order to show it in detail, it is said, "It is not like that," and so on, if the knowable hair, etc., does not exist, if the
