So! Or, the meaning of "there is no consciousness either" is that if the object is remembered, but the object is not acknowledged, then remembering the consciousness, but acknowledging that there is no consciousness, therefore my tenet is established. In order to dispel other doubts of meaningless establishment in dreams, here it says "here it says" etc. The so-called "in order to grasp it" means in order to grasp elephants etc. The so-called "that is also not there" refers to the absence of eye consciousness. In order to explain the reason for its absence, it says "due to sleep" etc., due to sleep, the five aggregates of consciousness of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body are prevented from outward activity, therefore there is no five aggregates of consciousness. The so-called "because of what" etc. refers to why it is impossible to have eye consciousness in dreams. Only consciousness arises in the form of elephants etc., and the form of elephants etc., worldly people are attached to as external objects, similarly, in the waking state, it is also thought that the blue image of the nature of consciousness itself, even without external objects, is attached to as external objects. The meaning here is that the forms etc. that become objects are all pervaded by the objects of eye consciousness etc., and if there is no it, then it is meaningless to it, therefore clinging to the form of consciousness itself as meaning, similarly, it is also the same in the waking state, therefore the metaphor is established. In order to explain it by explanation, it says "in the dream" etc., which is easy to understand. In order to answer it, it says "it is not so" etc., the so-called "it is not so" means that in the dream, clinging to the form of consciousness itself as meaning is not like this. Why is that? The answer is, because it is impossible for consciousness to arise in dreams. That is also because it is not established to arise from "non-self" etc. In order to explain that itself, it says "like this" etc., how?

Thus, the Mind-Only school says that just as external objects do not arise in your dream, so too consciousness does not arise in my dream. Therefore, how can you cling to the appearance of consciousness itself as an external object? Why is that? Because consciousness does not arise. "Eye" refers to the eye sense faculty. "Object" refers to blue and so on. "Mind generated by it" refers to the eye consciousness generated by the eye sense faculty. "All three" refers to the eye sense faculty, objects such as blue, and the eye consciousness, etc. "Is false" means it is not real. "How are these three" refers to those just mentioned. "The remaining three, ear, etc., are unborn" means that the ear, sound, and ear consciousness, etc., in dreams are also emptiness. Here, other Madhyamikas refute the Mind-Only view by insisting that objects exist in dreams, saying, "If a dharma," etc. "Belonging to the dharma-sphere" means included in the dharma-sphere; therefore, the eye consciousness in the waking state does not take it as an object, and it is not included in the form-sphere. Therefore, it is to be apprehended by the mind consciousness. "Therefore" means because there is form belonging to the dharma-sphere in dreams. In order to show that this view is unreasonable, it is said, "That is also unreasonable," that is, it is unreasonable to say that objects exist in dreams. In order to explain the reason, it is said, "Also in dreams," etc. "The three" refers to the sense faculty, object, and consciousness. "If to clarify another's doctrine," etc., means that if others say, we do not say that in order to establish our own view, but because the Mind-Only view holds that there is no consciousness without an object in dreams.

If, in order to refute that tenet, it is admitted that in a dream there exists form belonging to the dharma-sphere, then, in order to answer this, it is said, "At that time," etc. "At that time" means that in order to refute another's system, it is admitted that there is an object in a dream. If so, the example of a dream becomes meaningless, because the Madhyamikas have already proven that all dharmas are without inherent existence, the example of a dream becomes meaningless. Why? The answer is, "That is false," etc. "That" refers to the dream. "By the meaning of not being false" means that even in a dream, there exists form included in the dharma-sphere. "Arising from the example" refers to the three, such as the sense faculties in the waking state. "It is impossible to show the real meaning as a false meaning" because there is also form there. Therefore, this answer is not reasonable here. In order to show that because the three are not produced in a dream, at that time this example is reasonable for my system, it is said, "Because of what," etc. "By way of being completely established" means that the example of a dream is established by way of being without inherent existence. "Not established" means that these three are not established as being without inherent existence in the waking state. "In order to establish" means in order to establish being without inherent existence. In order to show that itself, it is said, "How is a dream," etc. Just as the three are false in a dream, similarly, the three, such as the sense faculties, are also false in the waking state. In order to conclude, it is said, "The mind is not existent," etc. In order to explain it by commentary, it is said, "As in a dream," etc. In order to show the source of that sutra, it is said, "Therefore," etc. Because all dreams, etc., are false, therefore, illusory sentient beings are objects of focus, they are appearances, but they are not truly existent, because they are like trees and pottery, etc.
