is experienced. Having become like that, it is appropriate to fully grasp the seed called habit. By having it, it becomes the cause of those, but not the chief, etc., because it is not reasonable to fully grasp the seed as stated. Because those are permanent, it is impossible to experience the arising and ceasing together. If so, how is such an Alaya-consciousness established? To this, an answer should be given: If Alaya-consciousness does not exist, then from where does the consciousness that arises from deep sleep arise? In the state of deep sleep, the six aggregates of consciousness and the afflicted mind do not exist, because they are invisible. Therefore, Alaya-consciousness exists, because consciousness arises from it when awakened. Similarly, when one is struck violently, when one arises from fainting, and when one arises from the cessation meditation, if one does not accept Alaya-consciousness, then from where does consciousness arise? Therefore, the Alaya-consciousness from which consciousness arises does exist. To explain this, the commentary says, "Like the ocean," etc. Just as waves, that is, water waves, flow completely from the ocean, and it is understood and certain that they go back and forth. What kind of waves? It is said, "Like sleep," because it does not move when there is no wind, so it is like sleep. What other difference is there? It is said, "Like obtaining one's own body through competition," which means that it is like competing, thinking, "Why don't I get up?" It is like obtaining one's own body through competition. Why is it obtained? Because the condition of the wind is near. Because it meets the condition of the wind that acts together. Therefore, the phrase "the branch of water is moved by the wind" distinguishes it from the ocean. Here, Alaya-consciousness is like the ocean, like sleep is habit, and the condition for full maturation is being moved by the wind.

It is like that, and the consciousness that becomes the fruit is like a water wave. Thus, having shown the example and connected it with the meaning, it is said, "Here also," and so on. "Here also" means that even at the time of the arising of consciousness. "The transmission of consciousness from one to another" means the transmission of consciousnesses such as blue and yellow. "Entering from beginningless time" means because samsara is beginningless. How is that? It is said, "Grasped and grasper," and so on, which refers to the clinging to the appearance of grasped and grasper in whatever is the conceptualization that is "This is the knowable, this is consciousness." Its habit is the particularity of the power of the arising of consciousness that accords with the conceptualization of grasped and grasper. Its ripening is whatever immediately produces the fruit. From that, whatever obtains the existing entity of oneself. "Ceasing" means the present. In this way, through the transmission of consciousness from one to another, from that which places the power of producing consciousnesses such as blue in the ālaya-vijñāna. How is that? It is said, "Related to one's own consciousness," the transmission of consciousnesses such as blue from one to another is one's own aspect, that is, the aspects of blue and so on, and grasped and grasper. Being related to that is whatever other consciousness arises that is associated with blue and so on, and grasped and grasper. That is the particularity of becoming its cause. "From that" means from the ālaya-vijñāna imbued with habit. "Gradually" means because it depends on the condition of ripening. "The aggregation of the condition of ripening" means if there is a co-operative condition of ripening. For example, if there is the consciousness of the door, that is the condition of the ripening of the internal consciousness, and the consciousness of smoke is the condition of the ripening of the consciousness of fire, and so on. "Whatever is completely impure, arising merely under the power of another" means that because the cause itself of the conceptualization of grasped and grasper is completely impure, the outer

Because of being empty of inherent existence, it is only the arising of other-dependence that is universally conceived by children as the grasper and the grasped. Therefore, the grasped that is different from the consciousness is not at all existent, this is the concluding statement. For example, with the words "Isvara and so on," one can include nature and so on. For example, those who assert Isvara and so on as the cause say that whatever is the effect is preceded by an intelligent agent, like a pot and so on. Trees and mountains and so on are also effects, therefore Isvara is considered the cause. Similarly, the Mind-Only proponents say that the alaya-vijnana is the cause. In order to show the view of the Isvara proponents through an example, it is said "like." For example, just as a peacock is the cause of peacock feathers, crystal is the cause of water, and branches are the cause of leaves, so Isvara is the cause of sentient beings. In order to show that the Isvara proponents and the alaya-vijnana proponents are the same, it is said "similarly." "Similarly" means like the Isvara proponents. "The basis of the seeds of the objects of all things" means as the basis of the habit of the objects of blue and yellow and so on. "All seeds" means becoming the cause of all. Although the two proponents are the same, in order to show the difference, it is said "whatever Isvara." Now in order to show the tenets of the Mind-Only school, it is said "because of what." Because this is the way in which the tenets of the Mind-Only proponents will be explained, therefore it must be admitted that other-dependence exists. "Claiming" means that because the reasoning that will be explained cannot prove that other-dependence exists, it shows that it is not accepted. If asked, why is it necessary to accept the nature of other-dependence? The answer to that is: because things are the cause of being able to be examined.
