The reason for saying "turning away from the profound Dharma" is that those who have inverted attachments to emptiness will fall into hell and other evil realms, and therefore will not be able to accomplish the great goal of attaining Buddhahood, but will only accomplish meaningless things. This is so that those who have long been particularly attached to "self" can enter the Dharma through a way that is in accordance with it. Therefore, it is first explained that teaching emptiness will become meaningless. Now, in order to explain that teaching the ālaya-vijñāna and so on at the very beginning will lead to a great goal, the words "at the very beginning" and so on are spoken. The term "at the very beginning" refers to the beginning of teaching emptiness. The words "by teaching the ālaya-vijñāna and so on" should include sentient beings and so on. The phrase "by refuting the views of the tirthikas" means by eliminating the attachment to "self." The phrase "leading them to a great goal" means that by eliminating the attachment to the object of grasping and so on, the Dharma that is taught will become the cause for obtaining the fruit of Buddhahood. For example, the tirthikas acknowledge a permanent "self" that goes from this world to another world and is the basis for bondage and liberation. Since the ālaya-vijñāna is taught in accordance with this, why is the ālaya-vijñāna also the basis for going from this world to another world and for bondage and liberation? Because as long as the seeds of affliction are present in the ālaya-vijñāna, it is bound. When the seeds of affliction disappear through the practice of the path, it is liberated because it becomes a complete basis. However, the difference is that the "self" is permanent, while the ālaya-vijñāna is impermanent. Even so, teaching the ālaya-vijñāna will cause the attachment to "self" to disappear, and because teaching the ālaya-vijñāna does not cause attachment to external objects, the attachment to external objects will also disappear. Therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna

By demonstrating wisdom, one will be led to great meaning. The phrase "from the later" refers to the fact that the ālaya-vijñāna is taught. Those who understand the meaning of the scriptures without distortion, through "not self" and so on, also comprehend that the meaning of the ālaya-vijñāna and so on is emptiness. Those who will abandon them refers to those who will also abandon the ālaya-vijñāna and so on. Only qualities arise means that because the ālaya-vijñāna is taught, only qualities with the characteristic of entering the Dharma arise, so there is no fault. As Āryadeva said, this is from the Four Hundred Verses. "Whatever" and so on, means that when showing benefit, one should also follow the thoughts of others, increasing joy without completely eliminating their thoughts, and this is what should be taught. For example, one should not talk about giving to a miser; one should not talk about discipline to someone who is explaining discipline; one should not talk about patience to someone who is full of anger, as this will not make them happy. However, talking about giving to someone who desires enjoyment; talking about discipline to someone who desires rebirth in higher realms; talking about patience to someone who desires a beautiful appearance, will make them happy. First show such topics, and then understand that they have become vessels, and profound topics must be discussed. If one refutes them with inappropriate topics from the beginning, they will retreat and will not strive to show benefit. Therefore, the Four Hundred Verses says: First, liberation from non-merit, In the middle, liberation from self, Finally, liberation from all, Whoever knows this is wise. To the inferior, speak of generosity, To the intermediate, speak of morality, To the supreme, speak of peace, Thus spoken, it always becomes supreme. Furthermore, Emptiness should not be spoken in any way to those who desire merit, Because for those who are not vessels, It is like medicine, If given, it becomes poison. Thus it is said. In order to guide those to be tamed, it is not only said that the ālaya-vijñāna and so on exist, but it must also be shown that all things exist.
