The samadhi without characteristics, which possesses self-nature, does not make all dharmas devoid of characteristics. However, since the nature of all dharmas is unborn, from the very beginning, all dharmas are devoid of characteristics. The so-called "absence of aspiration does not make all dharmas without aspiration" refers to observing the three realms from the perspective of non-substantiality, generating disagreeable thoughts towards all dharmas, and dwelling in a state of extreme longing. One should not practice in this way. The samadhi without aspiration, which arises from this and possesses the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind, does not make these dharmas devoid of aspiration. However, the dharmas themselves are devoid of aspiration because their self-nature is unborn. The so-called "absence of manifestation" and so on, refers to discriminating the emptiness of manifestation, absence of characteristics, and absence of aspiration. Since the self-nature of discrimination is unborn, the thought arises that all dharmas will not become the object of discrimination of emptiness, absence of characteristics, and absence of aspiration. The samadhi of absence of manifestation, which arises from this and possesses the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind, does not make all dharmas without manifestation. However, since the self-nature of discrimination is unborn, all dharmas are without manifestation. Here, some say that birth produces things, and if there is no birth, then things will not be produced. It is in response to this statement that "that which is unborn" and so on are spoken, because things are without self-nature. Some say that things are not produced by the power of birth, but rather by the power of causes, and if they have not arisen, they will not arise. It is in response to these statements that "that which has not arisen" and so on are spoken, because self-nature has not arisen. Thus, in order to show that for the Madhyamikas, emptiness and so on do not make all dharmas empty, while for the Cittamatrins, the dharma of emptiness will become empty, it is said: That which is the self-nature of dependence on others

Etc., as previously explained. The so-called "not to be expressed as the same or different" means that if emptiness dependent on others is different, then realizing the emptiness of distinct entities, since the apprehended and discriminated objects of other-dependence do not revert, it would lead to the fault of no liberation. If it is not different, then it would lead to the fault of liberation at all times, emptiness would become a real entity, and other-dependence would become emptiness. Therefore, the so-called "not to be expressed as the same or different" is the concluding statement. Like impermanence, etc., the word "etc." should include "done," etc. Among them, if impermanence, etc., among all phenomena are distinct, then the subject would become permanent. If they are not distinct, then there would be no difference between the subject and the properties, and impermanence would become manifestly established. Therefore, it is not to be expressed as the same or different. The term "that" refers to the Mind-Only school. The so-called "only emptiness" refers to the nature of phenomena, that is, the apprehended and the apprehender are emptiness. The so-called "all phenomena are emptiness" refers to the phenomena characterized by other-dependence, which are empty because they are related to emptiness. The so-called "not by nature" is because it is acknowledged that other-dependence exists. In the Four Hundred Verses, etc., regarding Nirvana, thinking of becoming mine, it is not seeing a real entity without emptiness as being associated with emptiness. Why is that? The Tathagatas have said that one cannot escape from samsara with wrong views. What is a wrong view? It is seeing an entity in a different place as a different thing, which is a reversed view. If one thinks that entities that are not empty by nature are empty by nature, then one could attain Nirvana by the wrong view itself. However, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have not taught the attainment of Nirvana to those who have wrong views, only by having right view as a precursor can one attain Nirvana.

For what reason? Therefore, because it arises dependently like an illusion, it is only emptiness of inherent existence, all phenomena are empty. Because of emptiness of inherent existence, the Blessed One said so, so it is not making the non-empty into emptiness. For example, just as not understanding the meaning that a monk should not drink at night. Some monks were repeatedly instructed by the teacher not to drink at night, and they said to the teacher: This is not appropriate for monks, how can you drink it? The teacher said: I thought it was water that I drank. Then, he asked others to bring water. The teacher said: Why did you bring something else? The monk said: When you think it is water and drink it, what is the difference between them? Just as here the craving for alcohol cannot be eliminated through water, similarly, Nirvana cannot be attained through distorted views, this is a concluding statement. The treatise is also from the Root Wisdom. Emptiness and so on, all views, means all attachments. Definitely liberating means not entering, whatever is distorted, that is emptiness. All views are merely distorted, not real. If someone clings to emptiness as real, then we have nothing to say about it, because from our teachings all discriminations will disappear, why would they attain liberation? They will not attain it. If someone says: You give me something that is nothing as a gift, if you say give me something that is nothing, then by what means can you give something that is nothing as a gift? Similarly, for those who cling to things as real only in dependence, by what means can you prevent clinging to things as real? Therefore, even if it is a great medicine, if it is regarded with a perception of faults, it will be abandoned by the Tathagatas, the great king of physicians. Therefore, the noble ones.
