The assertion that only the existent (effect) is (in the cause) is reasonable, while the arising of the non-existent and the cessation of the existent are not. Because statements such as "the non-existent cannot produce" have already acknowledged the existence of the effect. If one were to accept the arising of the non-existent effect, it would lead to the fallacy of everything arising from everything. But this is not the case, therefore, only the effect exists (in the cause). The Vaibhashikas believe that in order to avoid the arising of the non-existent, all things exist in the three times. They consider that the combination is only a temporary result, not a substantial result. Therefore, for substances that exist in the three times, the combination of causes and conditions only brings them to the present state, rather than producing a substance that did not exist before. The Sautrantikas and the Chittamatrins assert that the effect does not exist. They believe that if the effect already exists and is then produced again, the production is meaningless, so they acknowledge that the effect does not exist. Among them, the Vaibhashikas believe that from the atoms of earth, etc., arise substances with parts such as the second atom, so they acknowledge the arising of the non-existent effect. The Sautrantikas also acknowledge that the effect arises from the cause without existing, based on the scriptural quote, "Monks, the eyeless will arise, and the existent will cease." The Chittamatrins also acknowledge that the cause of the arising of all things is the Alaya-vijnana, the basis of the difference in habitual tendencies, and from the proximate cause of the complete maturation of habitual tendencies, arises the consciousness that enters, etc., which is the arising of the non-existent. Therefore, these proponents cannot go beyond the categories of the arising of the existent effect and the arising of the non-existent effect. For both of these views, in order to build a house, the decorations such as patterns drawn on pillars, doors, door frames, etc., are temporarily unsuitable for the view of the arising of the existent effect, because the house as its result already exists.

If the weakling admits that a house can be built, then it will become an admission that there is no fruit. Anyone who admits that there is no fruit, as has been shown, pillars and other ornaments are also meaningless, because there is no fruit, and the son of a widow cannot be produced by anyone. Likewise, for those who say there is no fruit, a house that becomes a fruit will not be built. If, in order to eliminate that fault, one does not admit that fruit is completely non-existent, then the one who says there is no fruit will be defeated. Just as it is unreasonable to use pillars and other ornaments to prove the existence or non-existence of a house, similarly, by examining whether internal and external actions and sprouts and other things exist or not, it should also be said that ignorance and seeds and other causes are meaningless. The so-called "Madhyamaka" is the "Fundamental Wisdom." If the nature of the fruit exists, etc., if the cause produces the fruit, then does it produce an existing fruit or a non-existing fruit? Neither is reasonable. Like this, the fruit that exists by its own nature will not be produced again, because it exists, just like a pot exists. The fruit that does not exist by its own nature will not be produced by the cause, because it does not exist by its own nature, like the horns of a donkey. To this, others, if they admit that the cause has the function of producing the fruit, then the fault you speak of exists. However, if it does not have the function of producing the fruit, but exists in the nature of the cause, and even if there is no fruit, the cause will not be established as a cause, therefore the fruit will also exist. The answer to this is, if it is not a producer but is established as a cause, then it is reasonable for it to become a cause, but how can it become a cause if it is not a producer? Even if the cause does not have the function of producing the fruit, even so the fruit exists, because without a cause the fruit is also impossible, because the fruit exists, so the cause also exists. To this it should be answered, when it is not a producer, it is unreasonable to become a cause.
