That is so. If self-awareness is not a valid cognition, why is that? Like this, things and the functions of things, even if it can be determined that they do not exist outside of knowledge, they exist in the nature of knowledge, so it is reasonable that they appear clearly in these things. If knowledge also does not exist, then whose nature would it appear as? Therefore, just the appearance, it is impossible not to be established as the nature of knowledge, so because there is no doubt of true or untrue, only self-awareness is valid cognition. Therefore, the original dharma that would not arise if appearances did not exist, if it is said that the appearance that is established as existing just by appearing is not a valid cognition, then, to this, it needs to be answered: if self-awareness exists, then it is reasonable to say it at that time, but self-awareness also does not exist. Like this, oneself makes oneself fully appear, this is called self-awareness. In one thing, it is impossible to have both the nature of knowledge and the knowable, because this would lead to the agent and the action becoming one, and it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself, just like the blade of a sword cannot cut itself. If we do not call something with the nature of knowledge and the knowable self-awareness, but rather say that one's own nature appears, what is that appearance that arises clearly without relying on other appearances? If that is the case, then cause and effect will also not be established, because this will again become an object to be refuted. Furthermore, is self-awareness something that has become a substance, or something that is not a substance? For the time being, you would not think that it is without substance, because it has the nature of appearance. If it is a substance, then it will become permanent or impermanent. It also cannot be permanent, because it is contradictory to produce effects sequentially and simultaneously. Even if it is itself impermanent, producing effects sequentially and simultaneously is equally contradictory, because cause and effect are unreasonable. Therefore, since it is established as the nature of an appearing substance, self-awareness is not established as a valid cognition. Therefore, since valid cognition is not established, how can one clarify the correct definition of treatises for valid cognitions? Therefore, it is reasonable to say that explaining the definition of reason is meaningless, because the terms of valid cognition and the knowable are established from the mundane. Valid cognition

As the Teacher himself clearly stated, the terms 'is' and 'is not' are merely worldly truths. By the way, that's enough. Now, let's get to the point. Having refuted the idea of arising from oneself, in order to refute arising from others, the previous position is established. Here, it is said 'all things' and so on, and it is said 'from what do the causes that have changed into otherness arise?' This is unreasonable. In order to show the unreasonableness, it is said 'that which changes into otherness' and so on. 'That which has changed into otherness' means arising from becoming something different. 'Cause' means the causal condition. 'Object' means the objective condition. 'Immediate' means the immediate condition. 'Dominant' means the dominant condition. In order to show the nature of the causal conditions and so on, it is said 'some say' and so on. Here, there are six causes: the efficient cause, the co-emergent cause, the similar cause, the corresponding cause, the pervasive cause, and the ripening cause. Among these, the efficient cause refers to conditioned phenomena whose own nature has not been realized, and the efficient cause of unconditioned phenomena. If it is said that whatever can do this is the efficient cause, then how can those that cannot do this be the efficient cause? Because they do not obstruct arising, they are efficient causes. If things that cannot obstruct, through not obstructing, how do they become efficient causes? For example, Nirvana and so on. To this, it can also be seen that even if the village chief has no power, the villagers will say, 'This person has made us happy.' Therefore, both have the situation of not obstructing, so there is no contradiction in being an efficient cause. Whatever phenomena are mutually fruitful are co-emergent causes, because they operate relying on each other's power. Mind is the co-emergent cause of mental factors that arise following the mind, and mental factors that arise following the mind are also mind.
