Therefore, you must also undoubtedly acknowledge this. Otherwise, if it is said that karma is self-existent, that would be too broad. The meaning is that whatever is not dependently originated is self-existent, which is reasonable. Because things that arise from causes and conditions, like illusions, are not truly produced, and therefore have no self-existence. If karma is also not dependently originated, then when it changes, because it does not rely on others, it will become permanent. Therefore, if it is clearly thought that the physical body, which is produced by it, also becomes permanent because the causes are not complete, this is one fault, because you do not consider permanence to be the nature of things. If karma and its results are permanent, then karma will not become a painful result of maturation. This is the second fault. Therefore, it will become a self, not non-self, which is the third fault, because suffering arises only from impermanence, and you consider it to be non-self. Because permanence is related to formations, the suffering of change, and non-self, or you have not admitted it, because whatever is impermanent is suffering, and whatever is suffering is non-self, this is an established tenet. If it is also like illusions, because it arises dependently, therefore you admit that it has no self-existence in itself, therefore there will be no faults as mentioned above, because whatever arises dependently is impermanent, whatever is impermanent is suffering, and whatever is suffering is non-self, even those who speak of emptiness do not deny conventional truth, therefore this must be admitted. Therefore, "Karma is not produced by conditions." This is explained extensively. Because if it is admitted that karma arises dependently, then, like illusions, it will not have birth and cessation in itself, and for what is not born dependently, the three faults mentioned above will be committed, therefore, the two noble ones immediately denied self-existence in order.

Therefore, to show this, karma is not born from any condition. It is not born from conditions, nor does it exist; this is the ultimate. This is the remainder. However, if one completely abandons it, wouldn't one also completely abandon the afflictions that are considered its cause by common reasoning, and the causally arisen birth of both of them? Therefore, to dispel the doubt of how these formations are formed by whom, and how things become the object of experience appearing as the nature of cause and effect by the distinction of establishing the distinction between the maker and what is made, it is said, "Formations are like illusions," and so on. Just as cities of gandharvas and the like, which are not truly existent, also appear with the nature of arising dependently, with the nature of appearing reversed, so are all formations. Because, if they themselves are established as truly existent, no other reason is seen. This is his thought. To clarify these very things, it is extensively stated, "Karma is the cause of afflictions." Because, like cities of gandharvas and the like, all formations are dependently originated, so although they are not existent in reality, they appear in a false form. For that very reason, even if only karma is suitable to be examined in emptiness, his thought is that, by common reasoning, all three should also be examined as empty in their own nature. What are the three? They are afflictions, karma, and body. Because "formations" have already been mentioned, because they are the main ones, only these are included in the distinction of establishing the distinction previously shown. Among them, by showing the doer and the deed, afflictions and karma are shown as the cause. Because afflictions are the cause of karma, and karma is also the cause of the body. For that very reason, it is said, "Karma is the cause of afflictions," and "The body is the cause of karma." How is this to be understood? It is said, "Formations are the nature of afflictions." "Also" means "because," because

Because of the nature of actions and afflictions, the causes have been explained by the tenets, which is the intention. It is also said: The root of existence is subtle growth, and various worlds arise from actions. Here, it should be understood that the root is the cause, the cause of actions. What is shown to accomplish actions is mainly that the body itself is the result of actions, and other things such as enjoyment and places are only its branches. Also, precisely because it itself can generate it, it is not explained separately, just as when it is said that the king has come, his entourage is not explained separately. Therefore, like this, when it comes to analyzing selflessness, because of its relation to it, all actions are approximately shown to be selfless. When the actions that are appropriate are completely without self-nature, the self-nature itself is unborn, and when is there an end to cessation? In order to show that the principle of Nirvana, which is the nature of peace from the beginning, is extremely established, it is said that without action there is no agent, etc. Action is behavior, and it is unreasonable to have no agent, so if they exist, the agent will also be generated. This corresponds to the agent, it is not without result, and the result and the enjoyer are not without attainment, so the existence of action and agent will generate the existence of result and enjoyer. Also, when, according to the reasons already explained, the action itself of selflessness does not exist, because it does not exist there, the agent, result, and enjoyer, etc., related to it also do not exist, therefore it is peaceful, it is complete peace, selflessness, and the very nature of peace from the beginning is the ultimate.
