"Commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness," Benefiting Others. "Commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness" Benefiting Others. In Sanskrit: Śūnyatāsaptati-vibṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness. Homage to the Buddha! He who, through dependent arising, Knowing no birth, taught, The perfectly enlightened Buddha with great compassion, To that teacher of beings, I bow. To the noble Nāgārjuna, like the sun to the darkness of the mind, Having bowed, the meaning Of his Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness Shall be distinguished. Like illusion, like a dream, Like a city of gandharvas, Likewise, birth, likewise, abiding, Likewise, destruction is taught. Thus, etc., becoming the remainder of the Middle Way, by that answering refutations, intending to compose as the main point, therefore, this treatise abandons the Svātantrika school. Without mentioning praise and homage, first, the noble Nāgārjuna's abiding or arising and ceasing, etc., are thus spoken. This is how it should be approached: Having directly realized the suchness attained through familiarity over countless eons, eliminating all delusions, and with a mind pervaded by great compassion, the Bhagavan, who does not deceive, turning the wheel of Dharma, in order to purify all obscurations, as a branch of teaching the selflessness of all phenomena, with examples such as illusion, etc., whatever was taught as the untruth of birth, etc., how is it at other times? To dispel such doubts, this treatise is emphasized to be taught. The teachings of the protector are divided into two types based on the distinction between faith and definitive meaning. The first of these is like showing empty vessels as a means to rescue children living in a blazing house. Although it has become untrue, it is shown as true, so the one who has a purpose is the one who has intention. As it is said: Although not true, yet with compassion, As it is said, "There is self," etc., For the sake of leading the Hearers, etc., Suffering, etc., are taught as true. Thus it is said. It is not appropriate to teach the profound suchness to those of inferior Bodhi lineage, for they have not understood the definitive meaning.

Again, those who are afraid, having abandoned those actions, the actions that will become impoverished by the Dharma of action draw near, and they will also individually experience the suffering of the lower realms. The second is the only one, because it enters into the only nature as it is. Here, the word of worldly speech is said to be without any contradiction because it is initially completely grasped. Some say that even though it exists later than birth, it is for the sake of combining the verses that were spoken first. Others say that it is also for the purpose of correctly showing the order of dependent origination. Thus, birth is not arbitrary, nor is it the cause of a sovereign, but it is the cause of afflictions and actions. Moreover, if the agent exists, then it is reasonable to enjoy its fruit, and if it does not exist, then it is not, because there is the fault of the agent being in vain and encountering the non-agent. Those who exist, the various non-Buddhist schools say, are the nature of not abandoning the previous nature. The Sugatas and others say that it is also like the state of the agent, and in the state of the eater, it also becomes the fault of not being the eater, so it is unreasonable, so it is the other birth of a different kind belonging to the same continuum. Such a nature exists, Ignorance, affliction, previous state, Actions are previous actions. The limbs with the characteristics that appear like this, Consciousness connects the aggregates. The causal nature of birth, represented by the limbs such as these, has been shown. The cause is also only prior to the cause. Birth is also the end of destruction, In order to represent the meaning, between feeling and death is old age and death, so the pervasive afflictions of birth at the later end have been shown by the words old age and death. Since it is like that, The words existence or birth and death, here the twelve limbs of dependent origination, have been shown in order. Existence or non-existence? Saying like this, Hey! Brahmin, it is like this, all all, are the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen realms, etc. Because it appears like this, the objects of aggregates, sources, and realms are existent.
