These do not arise from other sentient beings; merely through experience, one cannot establish them as things of true meaning. Therefore, even if one experiences self-grasping and grasping at what is mine, even so, because it contradicts scripture and reason, they do not exist. Therefore, the worldly grasping at self and grasping at what is mine are the same as the Tathagata's grasping at self and grasping at what is mine; all phenomena are established as mere names. Here it is said: If it is thus without self, for a while there exists a selflessness that contradicts it, and likewise, because it contradicts the nature of self, all phenomena are asserted to be without self. As it is said: The Blessed One said that all phenomena are without self, the self is impermanent, unborn, the object of self-grasping, and all phenomena are not like that. Therefore, because of the nature of selflessness that contradicts the nature of self, or because of being separate from self, all phenomena are without self. That also exists, and therefore, because there is no self's dharma, all phenomena are not merely names, if you say so. Answer: Why do you perversely cling to selflessness? The object of self that is completely conceived by the non-Buddhists does not exist, and it is not by its non-nature that all phenomena are established as selflessness. If that is so, then how is there selflessness here? By imputing it to what is closely taken, or by showing selflessness in the category of nature, a great meaning will arise. Among them, the person who is imputed in dependence on the aggregates is called self, because it is the worldly self-grasping. It is not what is completely conceived by the non-Buddhists, because it is like completely conceiving the form of a man in the darkness, it is completely conceived with a slight and very perverse view, but this is not completely conceived by all beings. Wherever all beings grasp at what is mine in dependence on the aggregates, that is because it has become a place of manifest clinging, so it should be excluded here. The conceived self, because it is very different from the establishment of worldly conventions, should be placed under the power of investigating suchness.

This is not to exclude it. If the non-Buddhists do not prevent clinging to this completely imagined self, then for what purpose did the Blessed One say this? "The eye is empty because it is not the basis of the imagination of self and what belongs to self, permanent, and of a completely changing nature." This scripture clearly shows the emptiness of the imputed self and the emptiness of its own nature, which depend on the eye, but it is not separate from the inner agent, the person. Therefore, "the eye is empty" means that the self that is imputed in reliance on the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, although it does not exist in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases in five ways, is established in reliance on the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. However, that is also non-existent. It should be understood that the eyes and so on are also non-existent in five ways. Therefore, the Blessed One said, "The eye is empty" because he intended to show the teachings to those who desire liberation. Because when examining the eye, the self does not exist, therefore the eye is empty, meaning it is separate from the self. The sound of śvā is the examination of ga-pa and so on. Therefore, through the phrase "therefore explanation," the meaning here is that by adding yaṁ and ti to ga-ba and so on, it becomes śūnya, which means empty or solitary. Alternatively, through the explanation of ga-ba and so on, phonologists explain the solitude separated from the crowd as the sound of emptiness. Therefore, whatever is separated from something is empty of it, which is the meaning of the explanation. The sound of emptiness can also be seen in abundance, such as "Devadatta is empty." Here, the former explanation should be adopted, that is, "the eye is empty because it is separate from the self," meaning that because of no-self, nothing of mine exists. Because it is separate from what belongs to me, it is empty, and there is no other eye that is different from the nature of what belongs to me. Just as the self is imputed in reliance on the eye, through what is made mine by the self, this is called mine. If there is no self, then there is nothing that can be accepted, so acceptance itself is unreasonable. And, there is no eye other than acceptance, so the emptiness of the eye is proven through what belongs to me.
