If someone says, "Knowing exactly as it is that 'it exists,'" that is entering into emptiness without reversal. If any renunciates or Brahmins do not desire emptiness, that is entering into emptiness in a reversed way. If the nature of other-dependence (paratantra-svabhāva) exists as an intrinsic essence, then it cannot be dependent arising. Who would say this: "Before arising, the nature of other-dependence exists"? Or say, "After arising, this nature exists"? If this nature does not exist before arising, then what is the arising of this that comes into being? It is acceptable to say that this exists after arising, but not when it has not arisen. If even arising itself cannot be definitively grasped, then it is not possible to examine the distinctions. The opponent cannot definitively grasp the distinction that "this" is arising from "that." Therefore, the arising of this does not exist, and what exists when it has not arisen, and where is it? Therefore, this does not exist. If this does not exist, then without a reason, samsara and nirvana would cease to exist. If for a moment this were to exist, then the self conceived by the tirthikas would also exist, but that is just speaking words. If our self does not exist, then bondage and liberation, and so forth, would not be accomplished. It is not even reasonable to temporarily assert that a self exists, because these two are contradictory to reason. If other-dependence exists as a real entity, then an internal agent would also exist, and this is an unexamined existence, which does not exist for worldly people. Therefore, if one thinks that one of these reasons is sufficient as the cause of samsara and nirvana, then the second should also be examined. Therefore, the cause of samsara and nirvana is the nature of things. If that is so, then how is it that the Blessed One said, "Whatever remains here, that exists, knowing exactly as it is"? Dependent arising is made into something real, but because it is dependent arising, it is non-existent like an image. Those children
