Regarding the establishment: From establishing what arises dependently, one obtains the eye. Those who desire liberation, in order to counteract the clinging to the appearance of the eye, closely rely on the non-self of all phenomena. Therefore, emptiness is the gateway to liberation. At that time, because the permanent self is negated, there is no need for a close taker. If one does not negate the clinging to how the eye exists, even if one negates the permanent self, one cannot even move a hair of clinging to the eye and so on. Deer and birds and so on, although they do not observe a permanent self, they cling to it. Therefore, here, it is not by way of negating the permanent self that one establishes the non-self of the eye. If one were to establish it, it would be by negating the permanent self in the close taking, or by negating that which possesses inherent existence. In any case, by the reasoning of what was said, because of non-self, at that time, because there is no antidote, non-self itself does not exist, as it is said. The meaning of "non-self is not self" is that there is no dharma that contradicts the self. Or, just as things and non-things are, for self and non-self, if things do not exist, then non-things do not exist. Similarly, if there is no self, then non-self will not exist either, as it is considered. Also, if the self exists, then it does not exist in the non-self form and other things, because if there is no close taker, then there is no close taking, therefore form and so on are not established, as it is said. "Non-self is not existent," that is, non-self is not established, therefore all phenomena are established as mere names. Here it is said: If the sole self does not exist, then the sole non-self does not exist either. Thus, just as fire and firewood are, self and non-self are established in dependence on each other, therefore will both self and non-self arise? Answer: Thus, self and non-self, saying "do not exist" is the remainder of the sentence. If the self or non-self that is being examined exists, then mutual dependence will be established. If neither of the two exists, how will self and non-self arise? Therefore, self and non-self do not exist. Or, this is another meaning. Some say: If neither self nor non-self exists, thus, self and

The self that prevents the absence of self and the non-self exist, and because of its existence, the absence of self to be negated will also arise. If it is also said that the nature of all dharmas, free from the duality of self and non-self, will become neither self nor non-self, this is also unreasonable. In order to understand this, it is said: Neither self nor non-self exists at all. Thus it is said. How does this cessation of "nothing at all" relate to some of the immediately following statements? Similarly, it is also closely related to the immediately preceding self and non-self. Here, a brief statement of the previous conceptualization: Since neither self nor non-self is established by the reasoning as stated, if it is prevented, how can self and non-self arise? Therefore, the proof is stated, such as "not self" and so on. The later conceptualization is that there is no nature of things that is separately established as self and non-self, and because the nature different from self and non-self is not established, there is nothing that is neither self nor non-self, so it is said: Neither self nor non-self exists at all. Again, this has another meaning. When establishing that all dharmas are merely names, the Tirthikas say: All dharmas are not merely names, because the meaning of self, which is distinguished by non-examination and so on, as explained by our school, exists. To this, it is said here: No-self, because for the sound of self of other schools, the meaning expressed, the self, does not exist, because it is not produced from itself, like the horns of a donkey. Non-examination is not universally present, like a flower in the sky, because it is not produced, therefore it is no-self. The materialists also think like this: No-self is indeed true, but only the arising of no-self exists. One's own schools also say: There is only the aggregate of no-self, separated from the inner agent, the person, and the self does not exist in any way. In response to these views, it is said, it is not no-self. No-self itself is non-existent, and how it is non-existent has already been extensively proven. Again, some of one's own schools say this: It exists as a substance imputed to grasping, and it is a real thing that exists in a person.
