Do formations and so on cease? To establish this, it is said: Whatever arises dependent on something, that does not arise when that does not exist. Things and non-things, the unconditioned, the conditioned cease, then there is nirvana. If, dependent on the cause called ignorance, there arises the effect called formation, if the cause of the effect called formation, called ignorance, does not exist, then it does not arise. Therefore, if there is no ignorance and so on, then there is no possibility of formations and so on. When there is no arising of ignorance and so on, then there is no thing. If there is no thing, then there is no non-thing of inverted nature. Therefore, even if there are no things and non-things, there is no conditioned in the manner of things and no unconditioned in the manner of non-things. Things and non-things, conditioned and unconditioned, are pacified. Pacification is non-arising, that is nirvana. Again, the manner of the unconditioned is not nirvana, because it would lead to the fault of arising conceptualizations in the unconditioned. Here it is said, by realizing the thusness that has been spoken of, the ignorance arising from the four inversions does not arise. Therefore, again, what is the characteristic of ignorance? And what is the object? From what does it not arise when that thusness is seen? If asked, to establish the characteristic and the object, it is said: Things born from causes and conditions, whatever is understood as a thing, the teacher said is ignorance, from that the twelve branches arise. Things born from causes and conditions are not born by their own nature. Among them, whatever clings to self-nature, the Blessed One said that is ignorance, and also because the nature that abides as it is is not realized, it is said that ignorance comes from non-realization. That also, because it is involved in clinging to self-nature, and because it focuses on self-nature, it becomes the nature of not knowing because of the nature of not fully knowing thusness. From that ignorance, the twelve branches of dependent origination, such as formations, arise. Again, how should this ignorance, which arises by superimposition, be stopped? It is said: If things are truly known to be empty, then delusion does not arise.

la. By the complete cessation of ignorance, the twelve links of dependent origination also cease. Correctly knowing the arising of dependence and relation, and seeing the truth as it is, one will never cling to the self-nature of phenomena. When one no longer clings to self-nature, one abandons ignorance here. With the abandonment of ignorance, actions also do not arise. As long as there is no birth, aging and death will not occur. Therefore, things and non-things, conditioned and unconditioned, quiescence leads to Nirvana. Again, those who desire liberation want to abandon ignorance, and how should those who want to abandon ignorance view these things? Answer: Those who desire liberation should observe Suchness, and Suchness is the self-nature of phenomena, which is also unborn. Therefore, those who desire liberation should not regard these as things. Here it is said: Oh, if that is the case, then one cannot say that one does not see all things like this, because the eyes are not damaged, the eyes are open, and the objects are abundant, including the appearance of blue, etc., it is impossible not to see. Similarly, the senses such as the ears cannot but hold their objects in their own way. Answer: If it is true that blue, etc., appear depending on the senses, even so, the direct perception of consciousness arising from careful analysis by wisdom will be refuted by the direct perception of the senses that hold it. For example, for a person with cataracts, unreal hairs and flies, etc., appear clearly, but those do not exist in the direct perception of consciousness with reason. That is not where the sensory direct perception of consciousness exists either, because the consciousness that follows reason clearly shows the true direct perception. If that is the case, even if those things arise from inverted actions, since they exist in the place of the senses and objects, they will become direct perception, thus completely cutting off the meaning of untruth. Even so, the direct perception of those consciousnesses will be reversed by the consciousness that engages in rational analysis, because it is powerful. Therefore, because of clinging to the appearance of things and holding on to them, and being the gateway to entering Suchness.
