How can it be said to exist? It should be said that this is non-existent. Someone says: Even if it is not in the eye, nor in the color and the middle, even so, it arises depending on the eye and color, therefore eye consciousness also exists. The answer is: What does not exist in anything, how can it arise from that? If it changes like that, then everything can arise from everything, those are non-existent. Even if it is said that eye consciousness arises depending on name and form, then this is not a true arising, because arising is unreasonable. In order to prove this reason, it is said: Depending on the eye and color, observe well and upside down in all aspects. For this sentence, if you observe the self-nature that appears separately with what self-nature, that is impossible, therefore, with that self-nature, consciousness is also like an illusion, which is said by the friend of the sun (Buddha). It is said in the sutra. Then, because eye consciousness is impossible, it is not grasped, therefore it is formless. Here someone says: It is grasping form, because there is a grasper, that is, the root of the eye, so the Blessed One said: The eye sees form, and then manifests attachment to the place of pleasure, and so on. The answer is: If the eye can see its own self-nature, it will grasp form, but seeing is not like this. If the eye cannot see itself, then how can it see form? Therefore, the eye and form are selfless, and so are the remaining places. If the eye cannot see itself, then, because it has not seen its own self-nature, it cannot see form like a blind person, etc. That is like a blind person, etc., therefore it will not become an eye. If this is argued, then, therefore, it is said that the eye is selfless. Because the eye cannot see form, therefore it has no self-nature. If there is no eye, because there is no eye and the eye consciousness that depends on it, there is no object to be grasped, therefore, form is also extremely without self-nature. Just as the place of eye and form has no self-nature, so are the remaining places. It should be understood that all places are without self-nature like eye and form. Here someone says: In order to closely indicate the place of touch, the eye

It is like this. Here, the six sense-fields of contact are as follows: from the sense-field of eye-contact, up to the sense-field of mind-contact. The so-called contact is the nature of the aggregation of the three: faculty, object, and consciousness. It is the cause of feeling, a dharma arising from the mind. And the sense-field of contact is the reality of the gate through which contact arises, so it is the sense-field of contact. It is to be understood from the sense-field of eye-contact to the sense-field of mind-contact. If the eye does not exist, then its sense-field of contact will not appear. Moreover, because it has appeared, therefore the sense-field of contact has appeared, so the eye exists. If it is said like this, the answer is: if the sense-fields exist, then it will become the so-called sense-field of contact. Even so, the sense-fields are not established. How is it so? For what reason? It is said in the sutra: When one is connected with contact, at that time the other is emptiness. Emptiness is not non-empty, does not depend, non-empty is also not empty. The consciousness of sentient beings, because of the same continuum, the continuum of one consciousness will closely arise. When it is close to eye-consciousness, only one eye will be connected with contact, so it is one connected with contact, meaning related to contact. When one exists connected with contact, then the other sense-fields of contact such as the ear are empty, meaning devoid of the nature of the sense-field of contact. Again, someone thinks like this, if from that state, one's own consciousness is empty, then the ear etc. devoid of the nature of the sense-field of contact, when their own consciousness manifests, they will not become empty because of the nature of the sense-field of contact. The answer is: emptiness or non-emptiness, does not depend. From anything, it is impossible to possess the nature of anything. For example, something devoid of the nature of hardness will never possess the nature of hardness. Similarly, the ear etc. will never produce the sense-field of contact. The eye will also constantly become something with the sense-field of contact. Because non-emptiness is also not emptiness, any non-empty self
