It is because the Buddha Bhagavan has completely abandoned. Because of abandoning, the Sugata has no self-grasping and no grasping of what is mine. Furthermore, with the power of the accumulation of merit, when wanting to enjoy the perfect result of manifest desires, one possesses enjoyment of what is approached; with the power of the accumulation of wisdom, one is free from all faults; with the path of possessing qualities, one beautifully proceeds for the benefit of limitless sentient beings obtained, therefore called Sugata, or Buddha, because one truly realizes all dharmas without obstruction with the wisdom of all-knowing, one beautifully proceeds, therefore is Sugata. Because of non-retrogression, one proceeds ultimately, just like a plague is completely cured. For the dharma that is consistently virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end, one beautifully speaks, therefore is Sugata. Explaining Sugata in terms of definitive words: Because one has completely abandoned self-grasping and grasping of what is mine, even when abiding, one says "I" and "mine." As said in the sutras, "Monks, my divine eye is pure, surpassing human sight," etc., is what the Bhagavan said. The Tathagata also said, "Monks, I dwell alone in a solitary place." Here, "mine" is mentioned. Although one does not have self-grasping and grasping of what is mine, one says "I" and "mine," because this will become a method for worldly people to understand, so it is said considering worldly people. For example, when narrating the realization of the crest jewel and hundreds of thousands of difficult practices, if worldly people want to understand, if one does not say "I was then," worldly people will not be able to understand the meaning they want to understand, or they will not be amazed by the actions of the Tathagata. Similarly, this should also be applied to grasping of what is mine. In any case, even if there is no I and mine, in front of worldly people, it is shown as if I and mine exist. Similarly, when speaking of other things, it is like the nature of that thing.

It should be promised to indicate this. Therefore, it should be known that what the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have said is not real, but is said in accordance with the conventional truth of the world. Because the object of speech is empty, just like clinging to self and what belongs to self, it can be shown up to completion through non-speech. Therefore, the signified of these abidings, etc., is non-signified, and only some expressions are established by the power of convention, but not by the power of ultimate truth. If everything that is said is unreal and only words, then where did the Bhagavan say this: "The self is the protector of the self, who else can be the subsequent protector? If the self is well tamed, the wise will attain heaven." Since it is said like this, if the self and so on do not exist, then how can the protector and so on be reasonable? If you again completely abandon yourself and seek an opportunity to argue, even then it is said: not self, not non-self, not self and non-self, because of non-non-self, there is no expression. What is said is the same as Nirvana, all things are empty of nature. Therefore, the so-called non-self is only the remainder of words. Here, the arrogant mind arising from practice is called self. Because it becomes the object of craving, it is a sentient being because of the strength of craving. Because it lives in connection with the life force, it is life. Because of karma and afflictions, it causes birth in other lives, so it is the one who is born. Because it is born mainly from the mind, it is mind-born. Because the mind is dominant, it is the one with mind. In order to make good, non-good, and unexplained actions possible, it is the doer. Because it experiences its results, it is the knower. Because it completely examines the object, it is the knower. Because it observes, it is the seer, etc., these are the differences in its names. Regarding the self, in the tenth chapter of the fundamental distinctions, it says: For the time being, fire is not in wood, nor is fire outside of wood. Fire is not connected with wood, nor is there wood in fire, there is no it there. Through the discussion of fire and firewood, the self and near-taking are inferred in order.

If, starting from the approach of taking and discarding what is near, we examine with the five modes of self and other, it is said to be selfless because it is impossible to exist. Alternatively, here the previous view is different. If, because the Buddhas have abandoned the clinging to self and the clinging to what is mine, the speech of self and what is mine has no entity, and the expression of self and what is mine of worldly people who have not abandoned the clinging to self and the clinging to what is mine becomes meaningful? Answer: The words of self and what is mine of worldly people are not meaningful. Why? Because, as before, because of denying the self, saying no-self. Because the self has not been established, the expression of self and what is mine of the world is also empty of expression. Here it is said, even if there is no self, even so, because the clinging to self is a dharma arising from the mind, it exists in self-awareness, so its expression is not just words. Again, what is the object of that clinging to self? It is the self. If that is the case, if there is no self, how will the clinging to self arise other than from the object? Without an object, mind and mental factors do not arise. Some say that mind and mental factors arise without depending on an external object, for example, dreams and so on. This example is not established for both, so it does not establish the view of the Mind-Only school. You also have no example, so your view cannot be established. Again, what is my view? It is that consciousness is directed towards external objects. Again, how is that not established? Because I refuted it. If your accusation were powerful, it would be so, but because there is no example known to both, it has no power. You also have no example that is established for both in relation to me, so your view cannot be established. Again, is my view that consciousness is directed towards external objects, and I do not think that consciousness itself is, why is it that the one who is directed towards external objects is my view? I admit the worldly conventions, and its object and consciousness are also known by worldly people, not by me. You also cannot eliminate this meaning of worldly people related to us.
