Here, if you want to establish that which depends on the basis (mthan gzhi) as being established as dependent on the basis, since the characteristic (mthan nyid) of the basis is not valid apart from the basis, it should be said that the basis is established by relying on the characteristic. Thus, these things that are established as the basis and the characteristic being established in mutual dependence should be examined. If the characteristic is established by relying on the basis, then by that alone, the basis does not exist by its own nature without relying on the characteristic. Since it is non-existent because it is not established itself, how can it establish the characteristic of another? Similarly, it should also be applied to the basis. That is to say, like this, if the basis or the characteristic is not established, the non-established basis or characteristic does not establish. Therefore, the basis and the characteristic do not exist. When the basis and the characteristic do not exist, how can Nirvana, which has the characteristic, be established? This is unreasonable. Seeing that the remaining things that are established in mutual dependence through the sequence of examining the basis and the characteristic are also easily not established, it was said to show it well: With this (sequence), cause and effect, feeling and the feeler, etc., the seen and the seer, etc., it explains all the slight things without leaving anything out. Through this sequence of the basis and the characteristic not being established, cause and effect, etc., should also be understood as not being established. What is done is the effect, what does is the cause. What becomes experienced is feeling, after classifying actions, feeling is said to be feeling. The feeler is experience, experience is also feeling and the feeler, it is feeling and the feeler. That feeling and the feeler exist together, so it is called feeling and the feeler. The word "etc." includes perception and what is to be perceived, etc. The seen and the seer, etc., any slight thing, the word "etc." includes the two-two of the five, such as hearing and the hearer, etc., any slight thing refers to the two-two things that are established in mutual dependence. All these things should also be applied as not being established through the sequence of the basis and the characteristic not being established. In this exposition, analyzing the number of each thing is the occasion for the sequence of examination.

Furthermore, for a moment, first analyze a single object, like this is its nature. After that, the sole cause, if there is a result, then it has results, and so on. Also, analyze many forms in the order of ignorance and so on. After that, starting from 'Ignorance conditions action, action conditions consciousness,' up to here, analyze the two-by-two objects that exist in mutual dependence. Apart from this, one should begin to analyze the objects that are completely defined by the number three with dependence and possession. If one says, 'If an object exists, it is permanent; if it does not exist, it is certainly annihilation. If it becomes an object, it belongs to these two, therefore, one does not accept objects.' This is unreasonable. If objects are not accepted, then there are no three times. Because there are three times, therefore objects exist, because it is the reason for the three times. Here, for an object that is born and not ceased, because its nature exists, and because it exists, it should be expressed with the word 'present.' That which has not obtained the state of the present is called the future. And that which has passed beyond the state of the present is called the past. If objects do not exist, then for what reason would the three times arise? Therefore, because there are three times, objects exist. One replies: If there are three times, then objects would exist, but it is not so. To show how it does not exist, it is said: 'Without a place, established mutually, scattered, therefore not established by itself, because objects do not exist, therefore it is not existence, these three times are merely imputed.' If there is something called time, then it depends on grasping, but it does not grasp. Therefore, because there is no grasping, there is no time. And why does it not grasp? Because there is no place, time does not exist. If there is a solid object, then what does it depend on grasping? Because it is not grasped from there, there is no time. Or, if one does not grasp any solid time, even then, time would still exist, because moments and so on make it manifest. These moments and instants, a moment, half a month, a month, half a year, a year, and so on of time.
