Faith is complete trust in truth, the Three Jewels, karma, and its results. Among these, there are four truths: suffering, origin, cessation, and path. Alternatively, there are two types: conventional truth and ultimate truth. The Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Karma is merit, non-merit, and unwavering karma. The results are the fully ripened result and liberation. Denying these is wrong view, entering into a state of non-existence. Worldly correct view is entering into a state of existence. The state of completely trusting in existence as realized by such a correct view is faith. Holding those existences firmly with the power of faith is the antidote to disbelief. Just as in muddy water, a water-clarifying jewel causes the mud to settle, thereby making the water very clear, so too, the jewel of faith clears away the impurities of the mind, making the mind clear. Once the mind is clear, just as in a perfectly clean mirror, truth and the Three Jewels, etc., appear as reflections. Diligence is joy in virtuous Dharma; it is the mental factor that, when combined with the mind, makes the mind joyful in accumulating virtuous Dharma; it is the Dharma that becomes the antidote to laziness, which is diligence. Regarding what has been done and what is being done, there is no forgetting in the mind; the manifestation of the mind is mindfulness. Samadhi is the mind being one-pointed; the point is the object of focus. When combined with a mental factor, it causes the stream of the mind to remain fixed on one object; this is a mental factor called samadhi. Wisdom is the complete discernment of Dharma. Discernment is the ability to individually recognize the nature of things, where many parts have become like a single whole. Particularly discerning is complete discernment, where wisdom separates the parts of things and then wonders what the nature of this is, and what essence it definitely has in relation to the object being approached, entering into discernment in this way.

It is like dissecting a water tree trunk to find its heartwood. For example, some people want to get the heartwood, so they carefully peel off the bark of the water tree trunk layer by layer to find it, but they cannot find any heartwood at all. Similarly, if wise people completely search for the self-nature of persons and dharmas, they will not find any heartwood at all. The so-called person refers to self, sentient beings, life, and nourishment. Just like houses, garlands, vehicles, forests, etc., they are established by relying on close acquisition. For example, a house is made by relying on materials such as grass, mud, and land. When it is completely built and can shelter from rain, wind, and sunlight, although it is useful, it does not have its own self-nature. If it has self-nature, then it can be recognized without relying on materials such as grass. These are the materials such as grass that serve as the cause. This is the house that serves as its result. If this is the case, there will be no attachment. Therefore, this has no self-nature. If this has self-nature, then it does not need to rely on others, because it is self-established. Whatever is self-established does not depend on others. What does not depend on others is the unconditioned dharma. Whatever is made is the permanent dharma. The permanent dharma is without cause, so the permanent dharma that does not depend on cause and conditions is non-existent like the son of a barren woman. Even so, there is also the saying of house in the world. Therefore, it has no self-nature. Without self-nature, it will not fall into nihilism because of this. If it is like the son of a barren woman, then it will not be established by relying on grass, etc., nor can it shelter from rain and sunlight, etc. Therefore, because there is no self-nature, it does not exist. Because it is an existing thing that arises dependently, it is also not non-existent. If it becomes truly existent, it will become attached because of its true existence. In reality, it does not exist, just like an image. Because of attachment, it will flow in samsara. It will also not become completely non-existent because there is no thing, because it is dependently
