It is the antidote to distraction, the cause of the mind's continuum focusing on a single object. Attention means not letting the mind indulge in the object at that time. Moreover, it becomes three types: Learner, Non-learner, and Neither Learner nor Non-learner. Among them, seven types of individuals are learners, because there are still remaining defilements to be abandoned, so there is a need for further learning. What are the seven? Those who have entered to realize the fruit of Stream-enterer, Stream-enterer, those who have entered to realize the fruit of Once-returner, Once-returner, those who have entered to realize the fruit of Non-returner, Non-returner, those who have entered to realize the fruit of Arhat, these are called learners. In the continuum of these seven types of individuals, that which is in accordance with the uncontaminated Samadhi is the attention of the learner. Arhat is a Non-learner, his accordance with the uncontaminated Samadhi is the attention of the Non-learner. That which is in accordance with the contaminated mind is called Neither Learner nor Non-learner. Thus, there are three types of attention. Desire is the function of consciousness, which is wanting itself. What does the mental factor relate to? Related to eating, walking, master, vase, felt, virtue, non-virtue, the mental factor with the characteristic of wanting to do, with the thought "I should do this", is called desire. Because there is the intention to pay attention, it is wanting to do, its nature is wanting to do itself. What is its nature? That is desire itself, by which one wants to do it. For example, when a snake is put into a bamboo tube and sealed, the snake relaxes its efforts to emerge and move and stays still, but when the snake charmer urges and awakens it, it becomes accompanied by the effort to emerge. Similarly, the mind, because it is in accordance with the mental factors, abandons the state of not making effort towards the object and arises with effort, that is the meaning. Like this is The action of the mental factors. For example, for any object, a snake with action

Just as placing that place in that place causes it to be placed, similarly, whatever mental factors correspond to any place, making it a place corresponding to the mind, it is placed by directing the mind to that place, therefore this is the distinction of the action of directing the mind. As the Dharma thus spoken, desire precedes thinking and directing the mind. Wherever desire goes, thinking and directing the mind arise there. Like the difference in the work of a horse, it first closely indicates, and thinking and directing the mind enter their respective objects by urging them on. If desire, which is characterized by wanting to act, does not arise at some times, then because the object is not clearly seen, it will not enter anything like an inanimate object by its own nature. Therefore, it is said that these five aggregates of appropriation are rooted in desire, caused by desire, arise entirely from desire, and arise by the power of desire. What is the difference between this and craving? Just as lac and shellac cause the two to adhere, craving is the cause of the mind's manifest attachment and clinging to objects, but desire is not like that. It enters only with the thought of wanting to act, so desire is so different from craving. Also, for example, some people living here pray because they want the upper realms, saying: Alas! How can I attain dhyana or the formless realm? Similarly, how can I realize the exhaustion of defilements? How can I realize the path? Like this, such aspirations should not be called craving, but this is desire for virtuous Dharma, because it arises in an object contrary to craving. The mind especially wanting an object is faith, the "especially" of faith means freedom. For one's own object, the nature of the knowledge of faith, like a moth to a flame, especially believing, this is faith. Whatever mental factor corresponds to it, causing consciousness to be undividedly focused on the object, this is the mental factor of faith. The difference from directing the mind is that directing the mind to an object is the nature of especially directing the mind. This, which is called the nature of especially directing the mind to an object, is the difference.
