Thus, doubt arises. Then, due to being accustomed to the untrue aspect, one clings to what is true as if it were real, and views it in a reversed manner. This is wrong view, a view that has entered a wrong path. Whatever can ascertain what is wrong, possessing such a nature, is called wrong view, and it does not refer to the nature of slandering cause and effect. From wrong view arises the view of the aggregates of existence (satkayadṛṣṭi), which clings to the aggregates of appropriation as the essence of self and manifests attachment. From this arises the view of extremes (antagrahadṛṣṭi), which speculates on the extremes of permanence and annihilation. From the view of extremes arises the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme (śīlavrataparāmarśadṛṣṭi), thus, whatever extreme is grasped is understood as purification and liberation. From holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme arises the view of holding views as supreme (dṛṣṭiparāmarśadṛṣṭi), whatever is held as pure is clung to as supreme. From this arises desire, desire for one's own view. From this arises pride in one's view. For the views of others, hatred arises, the order is like this. Each of these also arises from three causes: not abandoning subtle increase, generating inappropriate attention, and the object being in close proximity. That is, the power of cause, object, and combination, from these they arise. Speaking in terms of the influence of the near afflictions, they are called the six secondary afflictions, and they themselves become the cause of affliction for body, speech, and mind, therefore they are called afflictions. Among these, for the time being, whatever is afflicted is a near affliction. Other mental factors that are afflicted, included in the aggregate of formations, are the near afflictions themselves, because they make the mind close to affliction. What are these? Illusion, pride, harming, anger, resentment, deceit, and so on, many kinds, all come from the Abhidharma. Among these, illusion is deceiving others, just as illusion hides its own essence, enters a false form, and thus deceives the world, similarly, the mental dharma that is associated with, how one's own

That which hides the Dharma that abides as it is, and enters into the nature of untruth, the Dharma that deceives others, that is called illusion. Pride is arrogance. By what power does the continuum of body and mind arise, accompanied by contempt for others? Because of anger, the Dharma that is the cause of violently striking with fists, kicks, and so on, is called extreme violence because of extreme harm. Resentment is extreme attachment to sin. Possessing what Dharma, one cannot turn back from sin, like grasping with teeth or claws, extremely grasping sin and abiding, that is resentment. Holding a grudge is harboring resentment, that is, towards an object of anger, not making separate thoughts, repeatedly engaging again and again, therefore holding a grudge is harboring resentment, meaning increasing the object of anger in the mind. Deceit is the mind's non-remembrance, the nature of deceit is deceit itself. What is called deceit is that which possesses what Dharma, and makes the mind's continuum crooked, not truly showing the way of abiding and the way of not abiding, entering without remembrance and unclearly, that is called deceit. Among these, illusion and pride are stains corresponding to the cause of desire. Holding a grudge and extreme violence correspond to the cause of anger. Resentment corresponds to the cause of holding supreme views. Deceit corresponds to the cause of wrong views. Afflictions are the ten afflictions, namely: lethargy, sleep, excitement, regret, jealousy, stinginess, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, anger, and concealment. Lethargy is when the body and mind are unclear, therefore becoming heavy, causing unsuitability for Sleep refers to the Dharma that is contrary to the arising of the five aggregates of consciousness, it is the cause that gathers the consciousness, that is called sleep. Excitement is when the body and mind are extremely unpacified, like wind connected and moving on water, the part of the water stream appearing above, that is excitement. Similarly, arising from the mind, the reason for engaging the body and mind without pacifying them, that is excitement. Regret is feeling pain and sorrow later for the evil deeds done, arising from the later pain.
