The pervasive connections of attachment, the pervasive connections of doubt, the pervasive connections of jealousy, and the pervasive connections of stinginess. These are the (four pervasive connections). Among them, subsequent attachment is craving, pervasive attachment, attachment, and desire. Because these two intensify the suffering of existence (saṃsāra), they are called pervasive connections. Anger is harmful intent and hatred. Tormenting the minds of sentient beings is the pervasive connection of anger. The seven types of pride are called the pervasive connections of pride. These are: pride, excessive pride, pride beyond pride, the pride of thinking "I am," manifest pride, wrong pride, and slight pride. This refers to the arrogance that arises when one compares oneself to others, fully examining various differences between what is true and untrue. The cause of changes in the nature of the mind is the afflicted dharma arising from the mind. This is, for the moment, general pride. It is sevenfold in its modes of engagement. In this world, things exist in relation to each other, differentiated as inferior, middling, and superior. When considering those who are inferior in three ways—such as in learning, discipline, lineage, appearance, or power—and one becomes arrogant, thinking, "I am inferior to them," this characteristic that changes the nature of the mind is also temporarily called pride. If one perceives oneself to be equal to those who are inferior, giving rise to various distinctions in consideration, this is also called pride. If one perceives oneself to be superior to those who are inferior, giving rise to distinctions in pervasive consideration, this is also pride. If one perceives oneself to be equal to those who are equal, giving rise to distinctions in pervasive consideration, this is also pride. From the perspective of existence, it can be divided into four cases. For those who are extremely inferior, thinking, "I am equal to this one," and becoming excessively proud, this is excessive pride. Because this characteristic of pride goes far beyond the scope of pride, it is called excessive pride. If, even compared to those who are particularly superior, one considers oneself to be superior and becomes arrogant, this is

Pride is even greater than victory. The reason why the sound of pride arises from pride is because it should be known that it leads to sin even more than those before. The thought of completely conceiving what is "I" in the emptiness of the five aggregates of clinging is the pride of "I am," which is a synonym for "pride in self." Because it becomes a factor for discriminating self, the aggregates with outflows are the aggregates of clinging. Or it is clinging, because it arises completely from afflictions, so it is the aggregates of clinging, like what is called a fire of grass and chaff. Merely relying on clinging is also the aggregates of clinging, like a king's attendant. The things of clinging, merely arising from those things, are also the aggregates of clinging, like a tree of flowers and fruits. That is emptiness, because it is established by relying on clinging. Because it is separated from the nature of self, it has no nature. Those people, because they are deluded about such a principle, cling to it as "I," and this is the pride of "I am." Without having obtained the superior distinction to be realized, one thinks that one has already obtained it, and one feels satisfied with whatever appears to be approaching. That is the pride of manifestation. For that, the superior distinction to be realized is what abides far beyond the ordinary human dharma, desire, etc., such as knowing meditation, the fruit of meditation, samadhi, the fruit of samadhi, etc. Because one enters a wrong path, one becomes proud of actions such as killing, which are the dharma of unwanted fruits of the wrong path. Whatever pride makes one happy and enters into, that is called wrong pride. For accomplishing all activities, one pretends that one has no ability, and despises oneself. Whatever thinks that oneself is not superior, that is slight pride. The seven types of pride have been explained. What is the connection of ignorance? With what mental dharma does it correspond, so that with a reversed mind one does not see the true meaning, and one falsely imputes to the nature of things? That is called ignorance. That ignorance, for the object of the nature of dharma, is stainless wisdom. Incompatible with that
