It is the nature of ignorance. Whatever dharma arises from the mind, being separate from it, causes samadhi to arise, that is extreme pliancy. For example, it is said, just as the body becomes comfortable through extreme pliancy, and from comfort, the mind becomes one-pointed. Whatever dharma arises from the mind, being similar to it, causes one to harm others in various ways with fists and slaps due to anger, that is harm. The dharma that contradicts this is non-harm, by which one does not inflict various harms on others. Having been born into a noble lineage, and having heard and practiced the dharma such as discipline, if one enters into sin, one observes that it will lead to decline, thinking that these are unreasonable. By its power, one does not engage in sin due to oneself or the dharma, that is having shame, which is said to be the dharma of restraint, the cause of turning away from sin—shame. Being ashamed of faults in relation to others, that is having embarrassment. Therefore, the Bhagavan also said: Two dharmas protect the world, namely shame and embarrassment. Furthermore, whatever dharma arises from the mind, being in accordance with it, the mind enters the object of focus equally without effort, that is the equality of mind, called equanimity. That is like this, it is neither attachment to the object nor anger. Moreover, that is of two kinds, namely equanimity that discriminates and equanimity that does not discriminate. Belonging to the wisdom of an Arhat is equanimity that discriminates. Following the ignorance of ordinary beings is equanimity that does not discriminate. Liberation is being free from the defilements of the mind. Because of completely abandoning the afflictions, whatever dharma arises from the mind called liberation, by which the mind becomes free from defilements, that is liberation. The roots of virtue are three: non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance. Among these, non-attachment is the dharma that is the antidote to craving, and its characteristic is not clinging to the meaning of things. Non-hatred is the dharma that is the antidote to anger, and its characteristic is not having a harsh mind towards sentient beings. Ignor

Absence of attachment is the antidote to ignorance, the essence of wisdom. These themselves are also virtuous, and since they are the root of other virtues, they are roots of virtue. Just as the roots of trees are the cause of the growth, existence, and increase of leaves and so on, similarly, it should be known that these three roots of virtue are the root of all virtuous dharmas. The three that are the opposite of these three roots of virtue are the roots of non-virtue, namely attachment, hatred, and delusion. Among these, all desires that belong to desire are attachment, the root of non-virtue, because that is entirely the root of non-virtue. All hatred is hatred, the root of non-virtue. All ignorance that arises in the desire realm, except for the view of the aggregates as a real self, the view of extremes, and the delusion that corresponds to them, is delusion, the root of non-virtue. The roots that are not specified are three: craving, ignorance, and wisdom. Among these, all afflictions and near afflictions that arise in the desire realm, except for the view of the aggregates as a real self, the view of extremes, and the delusion that corresponds to these views, are non-virtuous, because they themselves are undesirable results. All afflictions and near afflictions that arise in the form and formless realms, and the three, such as the view of the aggregates as a real self and the view of extremes in the desire realm, all of these are unspecified. Among these, some are unspecified craving, some are unspecified ignorance, and some are unspecified wisdom. Therefore, all are called unspecified roots, because they themselves are unspecified, and because they are the root of other unspecified things. Others are not unspecified, and because they enter into higher states, the root and the dharma are not in agreement, so they are not unspecified roots. Latencies are nine latencies, namely: latency of attachment, latency of anger, latency of pride, latency of ignorance, latency of views,
