Time gathers beings together. Time induces sleep. It is extremely difficult to transcend time. Some who say this believe that time is eternal, and these views are refuted here. If time is inferred based on things, it is like inferring a house and cannot be transcended. Furthermore, those who say that time is the cause, regarding the arising and ceasing of beings as things caused by time, are in effect admitting that it is the fruit itself. How so? Because without a fruit, there is no cause. Therefore, the cause entirely becomes the fruit. Since nothing is done, a cause cannot exist. Therefore, the thing called cause here, by its very nature, is nothing at all. In reality, it becomes the cause of the cause that produces the fruit. So how can it not become its own fruit? Even if it is the fruit, how can one regard it as permanent, like a sprout? Therefore, in that case, since there is no such thing as cause and fruit, neither of them exists as established by its own nature. If it is said that the fruit arises after the cause has occurred, such as when there is a seed, a sprout arises, but when there is a sprout, there is no seed, so it is thought that the fruit is not in the cause, this is also not the case. Because when one fully contemplates the thing called seed before the sprout arises, there is no third contemplation other than another contemplation, so one will think whether it has become a cause or has not become a cause. For it, it is unreasonable for it to arise from a state of not being a cause, like fire and so on. The cause itself is also measured by the arising of the fruit, so it cannot exist before the fruit arises. If it is said that even without the action of the fruit arising, one recognizes a little bit as the fruit itself, then at that time everything would become the fruit of everything, but this is not the case. Therefore, since it would lead to causelessness, the cause is not established by itself without relying on the arising of the fruit. Therefore, the statement that the cause entirely becomes the fruit is without fault.

If the proponents of time argue that time is the cause of various phenomena, then time must transform into a nature different from its previous state in order to be conducive to the production of the effect. For example, in the world, when a cause transforms, it becomes the cause of other things. As it is said, "That by which something is done, that is the cause," ultimately, whatever effect arises following it is considered the producer of the seed nature, and is here considered the cause. And the cause of things like earth is that which, in an auxiliary way, approaches the accomplishment of the state that is in accordance with the production of the fundamental cause's own effect. The so-called seed, which is the fundamental cause, becomes the cause of the sprout when it itself transforms, and not without abandoning its previous state. Therefore, if various phenomena are made by time, then time must also abandon its previous state, which is far from producing the effect, and transform into a state that is in accordance with the production of the effect. Therefore, it is said that it is impermanent like a seed. As it is said: That which has transformation, that is not called permanent. If it does not change, then not only is the complete understanding of it as the substance of the cause meaningless, but also the effect that is considered to arise from it will arise without a cause. As it is said: That of which the permanent is the cause, the thing arises from nothing. The sprout that arises from the transformation of the seed cannot be a different entity from the seed, because it follows the seed and does not coexist with it, so do not think that a different entity has arisen, because different and coexisting things cannot be a cause. This is because various phenomena are impermanent, and time is permanent, so the cause and effect are different entities. Precisely because of this, difference and coexistence also exist, because although the effect arises, time does not change. Therefore, any effect...

That which is born from time is something that comes from the unborn, becoming independent of cause and condition, and arising of itself. It is unreasonable to say that the fruit that arises dependent on cause and condition comes from the unborn, because for all self-natures, there is no arising from the unborn. For anything for which existence is impossible for all self-natures, like the horns of a donkey, causes and conditions cannot produce it. Therefore, that which transcends the nature of cause, any permanent thing that is considered a cause, this birth from the unborn only gives rise to causeless things, meaning it only arises of itself. Now it is so, and again it is said that it is meaningless to fully contemplate the cause, so what should be done? For that which arises of itself, the cause becomes inverted. Because it is established by itself, for this going, the so-called time of cause becomes unnecessary. Therefore, the cause of cause is not permissible. This is also not permissible, like this: That which is born from a permanent thing, how can it become impermanent? In the world, it is only heard that from impermanent seeds, an impermanent fruit, namely a sprout, arises. But it is not that a little impermanent thing arises from some permanent things. Time is permanent, and its fruit is impermanent, so how can that be established? This is also not permissible, in the world: At no time have the two, cause and effect, been seen to have dissimilar characteristics. The cause is permanent, and the effect is impermanent, such different characteristics have never been seen in the world, so time has no causal nature. If someone says, haven't you seen roots growing from the hair of cows and the wool of sheep, reeds growing from horns, lotuses growing from reeds, and so on? That is also because impermanent things themselves transform and approach, so the element is taken as the cause, and there is no dissimilarity in characteristics. Because there, neither cause nor effect exists, because it is impermanent. Undoubtedly, it is impossible for all to manifest a fruit similar to that end, because the fruit also follows various actions. Mistake.
