The Extensive Commentary on the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice of a Bodhisattva. By Chandrakirti. The Extensive Commentary on the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice of a Bodhisattva. By Chandrakirti. In Sanskrit: Bodhisattvayogacārācatuśatakaṭīkā. In Tibetan: The Extensive Commentary on the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice of a Bodhisattva. Homage to the noble youthful Mañjuśrī! Here, in order to explain the meaning of the sixteen chapters of verses of the treatise, the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice of a Bodhisattva, composed by the teacher Āryadeva, I will explain it in order to briefly show its general meaning. From what is it known how worldly things exist? Having distinguished them, it gradually shows the ultimate truth. In this, the first four chapters will fully clarify how worldly things exist. Thus, the five aggregates, such as form, depend on causes and conditions and are produced, and since they also possess the nature of being produced, they are impermanent. Those that are impermanent are inevitably of the nature of being harmed by impermanence itself, therefore they are suffering. Those that are suffering are always causing weariness, therefore they are impure. Those that are impure are to be abandoned, and since they are not suitable to be taken with the grasping of self and the grasping of what belongs to self, they are selfless. Therefore, such worldly things as these appear differently from what is inverted, and it is inevitably made clear that these are to be abandoned, and Buddhahood itself is to be taken. Since it is attained by correctly showing the practice of a bodhisattva, the fifth chapter shows the practice of a bodhisattva. Since being overwhelmed by afflictions obstructs the practice of a bodhisattva, the sixth chapter examines afflictions. The seventh chapter examines objects, since objects are the cause of the arising, abiding, and increasing of afflictions. However, those objects, for sentient beings who have not realized the nature of reality and who possess inappropriate attention to objects, are...

Because it is the cause of arising afflictions, in order to make the minds of students who wish to hear the explanation of the ultimate meaning of this treatise, that is, the nature of the Dharma, capable, the eighth chapter is the chapter of complete purification. After that, the eight chapters of differentiation explain the absence of self-nature of all phenomena, which is the concise meaning of the Four Hundred Verses. Now, it is divided into two by the current reciters and commentators. The Four Hundred Verses are divided into two by the current reciters and commentators, that is, the monk Dharmapala, according to his arrangement: one is the Hundred Verses that explain the Dharma, and the other is the Hundred Verses of debate. Now I will divide them into one. Now I will divide the Four Hundred Verses into one. By doing so, the previous arrangement can also be completely preserved, and it can also benefit those who should be benefited, because the meaning of the treatise that one wants to express is selected, so that one can perfectly accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Because the teacher Aryadeva is: one who wanted to be accepted as a disciple by the teacher Nagarjuna, therefore, the true meaning of this treatise is not the reason of other schools. Thus, the teacher Aryadeva was born in the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka), the prince of the king of Simhala, and finally gave up the right of succession and became a monk there. After that, he came to the south and became the attendant of the teacher Nagarjuna, and because he followed his school, therefore, the true meaning of the Four Hundred Verses is not different in nature from the true meaning stated in the Madhyamaka treatises. If someone separates the nature and speaks, then to say that his school is separate is very rash, because he has a wrong view of its Dharma nature. This Four Hundred Verses is: because the word "four" is hidden, and in order to dispel various discriminations, it is called "Hundred Verses", because it is the Dharma that is held, so it is a treatise. Because the first word is hidden, and in order to dispel various discriminations, it is a hundred.
