If afflictions are reversed by practice, then why do most people appear not to have overcome afflictions? This is because they lack particular interest in the profound Dharma. Like this: When merit is small, regarding this Dharma, One will not even develop doubt. Merely developing doubt, Will cause existence to become fragile. Unintelligent people have been accustomed to inverted views since beginningless time, and they cling to phenomena like reflections as if they were true. They think of the teaching of emptiness as if it were a precipice. This is because their minds lack the root of virtue that is particularly interested in emptiness. For such beings, apart from inverted cognition, they will not even develop doubt about this Dharma of emptiness, thinking, "Is it like this? Is it not like this?" Therefore, since the cause of liberation is inverted, how can there be liberation? If the Dharma of emptiness is correctly taught, then what cause makes them think that this Dharma is not like this and develop doubt? Merely developing doubt will certainly cause their existence to become fragile. If they think, "Is it like this?" then at that time it will gradually become the cause of cutting off the thieves of affliction. Or, the doubter will certainly strive to investigate, and by the power of reasonable teachings, will certainly become certain about the correct view, thereby cutting off samsara by the cessation of affliction. Therefore, even at the time of doubt, their existence will only appear fragile, because they are in a state that is in accordance with destroying it. It is like the horse king Balahaka being freed by a rakshasa. For example, a caravan leader who has lost his mount is seized by a rakshasa and treated as a family member, and the rakshasa says to him, "You must never go to the south," thereby preventing him from going to the south. He leaves merely because he doubts, "Why is he preventing me from doing this?" Afterwards, he meets the horse king Balahaka, and from then on he is freed from that rakshasa and reaches the other side of the ocean. If he does not develop doubt, then he will not be freed from that rakshasa, and he will not reach the other side of the ocean. Also, for those who

Gathering and consuming become the cause of decay, and the Dharma, whose characteristic is emptiness of inherent existence, is said by the Bhagavan to be undiminished and increasing from the first moment of patience until liberation is attained, but worldly dharmas are not like that. Those dharmas will decay even from the exhaustion of their fruition, and will not arise if the conditions are not complete. Thus, the Teacher said that giving and so forth, which are not blessed by the Perfection of Wisdom, cannot lead to the city of omniscience like a blind person. Therefore, if that is the case, whoever does not respect the Dharma that the Buddha said would increase until liberation is clearly not wise. Not generating respect for the Dharma that constantly benefits and increases and has excellent qualities, that ignorance is like fearing what should be abandoned, and therefore reveals one's own foolishness. Therefore, since one will become so foolish, the wise should place respect in viewing inherent existence as emptiness. Like the Laddu of Likara, like the Thurma and the Mudra. For example, just as the Laddu of Likara should be fully tasted. Also, how some person has accomplished two vidya-mantras. One of them is by completely reciting the Thurma, to pacify all the diseases of beings. The second is with mudras and so on. Then he said to some friend, "Accept these two vidya-mantras, they will be beneficial to you." But he did not accept. Then that friend died, and he had a serious illness, and it was incurable, just as he himself would die. Also, do these things seem empty in order to be free from desire as if they were not empty? Or is it just that inherent existence is empty, and it is declared to be empty? It should be said: 'I will pass into nirvana,' it is not non-empty, nor is it seen as empty, with wrong views one will not pass into nirvana, thus the Tathagatas say. Things exist elsewhere.
