Everything arises dependent on ignorance. Just as when the senses of the body deteriorate, all the senses that depend on them also deteriorate, similarly, if one cultivates dependent origination and destroys afflictions, since there is nothing to depend on, all afflictions will be destroyed, like a poisonous tree. Just as a poisonous tree has all that is irrational, and when it is destroyed, all that is irrational is destroyed, and if it is not destroyed, it will not be destroyed, similarly, when ignorance is completely pacified, all afflictions will be completely pacified. Here it is said: Just as when the head is cut off, life does not enter, similarly, by cutting off ignorance, the wheel of afflictions will not enter. Furthermore, how should one properly abandon ignorance, the root of irrationality? It should be explained: If one sees dependent origination, ignorance will not arise. Therefore, with all effort, one should speak of this truth here. If sprouts and formations, etc., which are of an inner and outer nature, were to have inherent existence, then, since they exist by their own nature, they would not need to depend on ignorance and seeds, etc., because what is already established does not need to be established again. These sprouts and formations, etc., arise dependent on the collection of ignorance and seeds, etc. Therefore, because they are dependently originated, like images and illusions, they are without inherent existence, and because they are devoid of inherent existence, they are empty. Thus, if one truly sees dependent origination, one will abandon ignorance, and from abandoning ignorance, one will also abandon attachment, etc., which depend on it. Because of this, since closely showing dependent origination by the method of abandoning ignorance is very important, therefore, in the Treatise of Four Hundred Verses by the All-Knowing, the treatise that will be explained will speak of the truth of dependent origination, like the full moon. Just as when the full moon appears, darkness dissipates, similarly, by seeing dependent origination, the moon of wisdom arises, and ignorance will dissipate. Here it is said: The condition of ignorance

These natures themselves do not dwell together with the blazing rays of the sun, like the light of the sun and darkness. If one speaks of the means of abandoning desire and so forth, then how should one know those sentient beings who engage in them? Therefore, it is spoken according to their characteristics. Always delighting in earth and so forth, generous, eating, pure, and changing. Such characteristics appear in people with desire. They delight in dances that hold the earth, laughter, coquetry, flowers, fragrances, garlands, unguents, ornaments, colors, and so on. They possess a gentle and comfortable demeanor, are pure, intelligent, speak sweetly, speak directly, are generous, eating, and changing. Such things are the characteristics of engaging in desire. The opposite of that is the characteristic of engaging in hatred. Deceivers are those who engage in delusion. Thus, one should understand their minds by the signs that have been spoken of. Like a money changer eating meat. If there is a money changer, he collects various implements, and if he abandons them, he abandons everything. Likewise, if there is desire, he collects various implements, and if he abandons desire, he abandons everything. Here it is said, desire makes others desire, and one greatly rejoices in desiring oneself. Hatred is the opposite of these, and delusion makes one confused. Here it is said, if one speaks of the characteristics of engaging in desire and hatred and so forth, then how should one tame them? It should be said that the Buddhas say that for those with desire, food, Dharma robes, monasteries, all that abandons virtue, and constantly dwelling near the guru. Those who engage in desire should generate detachment from places, food, and Dharma robes, and those who are stingy, disagreeable, and abandon virtue should desire them, as the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have said. Therefore, as an antidote to those with desire who are attached to monasteries, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, said that one should be a forest dweller, a tree dweller, a charnel ground dweller, and one without shelter. As an antidote to attachment to bedding,
