It should be done extensively. Whatever arises from mutual causes is like when one thing is destroyed, the other is also destroyed. Just as with a quiver, because they are mutually dependent, the phenomena that arise from each other are destroyed when one of them is destroyed. Therefore, what is produced by conditions is also destroyed by conditions, but it is not produced by causes. Another view is that any phenomena that arise from the combination of two things will not arise if either one is incomplete. For example, birds can fly because they have two wings, but they cannot fly if either wing is incomplete. Similarly, one should observe desire that arises from conditions. In this way, it arises from external and internal conditions, and because it does not arise if either one is incomplete, it is easy to understand. Also, just as the eye perceives objects, some phenomena arise from the combination or non-combination of two things. Similarly, one should observe desire that arises from causes. Because it can arise even without external conditions, it is difficult to understand. Here it is said: "Whatever affliction meets (an object), it certainly arises through effort. The affliction that is inherent in nature arises with difficulty." Similarly, one should also apply the abandonment of all anger to this, like this: "Anger, if firm and certain, causes great non-virtuous faults. Therefore, by distinguishing and knowing in all ways, one will be liberated from afflictions." Because hatred is clinging tightly, and only increases flesh and blood, is unwholesome, burns oneself and others, clearly harms others, makes the face ugly, and so on, it is the cause of producing such meaningless things, and it is the result of bad migrations, and it is the cause of great faults such as committing the five heinous crimes, so the faults are greater and heavier than desire. Desire is lighter than hatred because it can be temporarily free from desire, and the faults are smaller, its characteristics will be explained in detail later. Anyone who, in all ways, understands the classification of faults, the faults, the basis, and the method of abandoning desire and so on, and cultivates its antidote, will surely.

The afflictions are eliminated by cutting off their roots, just like craving for the Dharma. For example, when the Bodhisattva Good Intelligence was being prophesied, the Blessed One Dipamkara saw that he had pressed his hair with both feet. Because of the disturbance of craving for the Dharma, he spoke negatively, saying that like animals, he was pressing his hair with both feet. As a result of that action, he was born as an animal for ninety-one kalpas. Then, when he was the son of a boatman, he heard the name of the Blessed One Shakyamuni and wondered if he was still increasing in happiness and dwelling in the realm of animals. He then harmed his own body and died, and was reborn among humans. He renounced the world in the teachings of the Blessed One Shakyamuni, and while sweeping in front of his own door, he directly realized the state of an Arhat from sweeping. The Blessed One also saw this and said, "Craving for the Dharma is seen after a very long time." Here it is said: If afflictions are well distinguished, And one relies on opposing forces, One quickly attains peace, Like a sick person relying on medicine. The distinctions of the characteristics of desire and hatred have been spoken of. Now, the distinctions of the characteristics of ignorance will be spoken of. It should be said: Just as the body is to the body's senses, Ignorance pervades all things. Therefore, all afflictions Are overcome by overcoming ignorance. Here, since things that arise dependently are by nature empty, ignorance, being confused about how they are truly real, engages in superimposing on things as if they were truly real in their own nature. Desire and so forth also engage in superimposing distinctions such as loveliness and unloveliness on the nature of things that are thoroughly conceptualized by ignorance, and therefore they are no different from ignorance and also rely on ignorance, because ignorance is the most important. Just as things like the eye, which are no different from the body's senses, arise relying solely on the body's senses, so too do afflictions.
