Therefore, due to ignorance, foolish people do not truly see the faults. Regarding this, they might think, although there are ways to suppress desire and so on, why should they be abandoned? Because they are the source of suffering. For example: Desire arises from not encountering, anger from lacking the power to overcome, and ignorance from not fully understanding. They do not recognize themselves. Here, desire is suffering because one cannot obtain the object of desire, which appears as something to be desired; anger is suffering because one cannot destroy the powerful; and ignorance is suffering because one does not fully understand the subtle meaning. Therefore, these become suffering through these causes, and the fact that they do not fully understand those who are suppressed by themselves is even more suffering. Therefore, in that case, since abandoning suffering is extremely harsh, they should be completely abandoned like enemies holding sharp swords in their hands. It is like wanting to obtain the consort of a ruler. A certain poor man wanted to obtain the consort of a ruler, but the entourage of the rulers' consorts was very well guarded, and because he could not obtain her, he would experience intense suffering caused by desire. Then, he would think, how are these consorts so closely guarded? Then anger would arise towards that ruler, but he could not cause him any harm, and then he would experience great suffering arising from anger. When one is obscured by desire and hatred, ignorance will also increase, and one will not fully understand, and will also be tormented by the suffering arising from it. This is because they are obscured by themselves, so they cannot recognize themselves. Similarly, suffering will also arise from these such as desire. Here it is said: Because one lacks merit, here, one cannot obtain what one desires. For him, what suffering could be more difficult than this? Here it is said: What? How does ignorance encounter desire and hatred?

So, do attachment and hatred have mutual contact or not? It should be explained. Just as bile and phlegm are not seen to meet together, similarly, anger and attachment are not seen to meet together. For example, because what is born of water and what is born of fire are mutually contradictory, bile and phlegm do not meet together, and bile does not meet with phlegm. Similarly, anger and attachment do not meet together, and attachment does not meet with anger, because attachment and aversion are mutually contradictory. Ignorance, however, can meet with both of them, because it is compliant, like phlegm and bile and wind. It is like pouring fire into a water jar. Some fools think, 'I will mix fire and water here,' and put fire into a water jar, but because they are contradictory, they will not meet. Because of the contradiction, just as bile born of fire and phlegm born of water do not meet together, so it is with attachment and hatred. Therefore, having understood that attachment and hatred are mutually contradictory, the teacher who trains disciples should use attachment like a servant, because it is not spared as a remedy. Anger should be treated like a king, because its remedy is spared. Attachment should be abandoned by showing things that are not in accordance with it, because abundant things are in accordance with attachment. Just as a servant is restrained and driven by threatening gestures and so on, so the practice of attachment should be tormented and driven again and again, because once it is assigned to work, attachment has no opportunity to arise, so its remedy is not spared. The practice of hatred should be respectfully served like a king, because hatred is not provoked by respectful service, so its remedy is spared. When dealing with ignorance, one should treat it with sparing or not sparing, in a way that weakens its ignorance, that is its remedy. In this way, the lama should be skilled in the behavior of training beings, so that the disciple is turned away from the arising of afflictions.
