If those with matted hair and dirt are called ascetics because they endure the suffering of pulling out hair and the like, then it should be said: If happiness increases desire, and suffering increases anger, why is happiness not ascetic, and how is suffering ascetic? If it is thought that because happiness increases desire, it is superior to completely abandon the objects of experiencing happiness, then suffering also increases anger, shouldn't the objects of experiencing suffering also be completely abandoned? Therefore, for what reason do you consider experiencing happiness not to be ascetic, and experiencing suffering to be ascetic? If being tormented by afflictions is what makes one an ascetic, then both of these are tormented by the fires of desire and hatred, so how can one be an ascetic and the other not? Furthermore, those who are produced by the attachment to the characteristics of desire, hatred, loveliness, and unloveliness, even if they only slightly enjoy the objects of experiencing happiness and suffering, should not arise (afflictions), because for those who are free from desire, they would also arise (afflictions). By showing the qualities of purification and humble implements, and prohibiting the enjoyment of experiencing happiness, it would be absurd to think that desire would arise even for those Shakya people who have desire. Because of enjoying temples, food, and luxurious Dharma robes, it would be absurd to think that hatred would arise even for those who have hatred. Therefore, in every way, only the Shakyas are ascetics, because like those who are free from desire, even those who universally have desire engage in abandoning afflictions through skillful means. The outsiders are not ascetics because they always follow the path shown by ignorant people and are tormented by the suffering of afflictions. It is like squeezing sugarcane. Just as when sugarcane is squeezed, sugarcane juice, sugarcane pulp, molasses, sugarcane candy, and rock candy are obtained, the Shakyas also do not cling to the characteristics of loveliness and unloveliness, so
