If one is tormented by afflictions such as desire, one will obtain various distinctions of happiness in this life and the next; but those who are mainly suffering are not like that. Here it says: If someone is skilled in happiness and can endure the suffering of the fire of desire, then they are truly able to endure asceticism; there is no fire of desire in suffering. If one is confused inwardly because of outward suffering, then one is not a true ascetic. Why can't all the mountain beasts and birds become ascetics? Because the teachings are not the same, so logically, the two cannot become ascetics. This is like a cold life that is gone all at once, not existing continuously. If desire is the standard, then for suffering that is in accordance with the Dharma and not in accordance with the Dharma, desire will become the same. If the wisdom of the holy ones is in accordance with the Dharma, then the wisdom of the non-holy ones cannot change the Dharma. Those who want to abandon desire, etc., should first understand their actions, and then rely on their antidotes. Regarding this, the action of desire is accumulation, the action of anger is strife, and like wind to all things, the action of ignorance is nourishment. Desire is clinging too much to what is desired, thereby clinging to sentient and non-sentient things as real existences; the antidote to this is abandoning one's retinue. Anger is complete turning away, therefore it has the action of fighting and arguing; the antidote to this is abandoning accumulated wealth, following loving-kindness, and enjoying temples and food, etc., that are in accordance with one's mind. Ignorance is because one does not understand what is superior and not superior, therefore it completely reveals all the collections of afflictions. Just as wind, through especially entering the four great elements such as earth, eliminates the burning of fire, the coldness of water, and the hardness of earth, ignorance also generates very strong desire and anger, because it does not see any fault in its own object. The antidote to this is to thoroughly distinguish the nature of things as they are, etc., just as a water demon is afraid of fire. For example, a water demon cannot be frightened by contempt, discrimination, and giving, etc., but is afraid of punishment.

It works from... Moreover, because it is very young, it can only arise from fire, not from anywhere else. Similarly, greed, hatred, and delusion cannot be averted by collecting, fighting, and abandoning, but can be averted by the fire of wisdom. For complete peace, it is not suitable to treat equally, and giving from wealth and so on is not worthy of praise, and it cannot be accomplished by distinguishing arrogant people, because he wants to overwhelm others here. Thus he speaks. Similarly, whatever you, Great Hero, have said has been perfectly accomplished. Afflictions can only be realized through wisdom, not by other means. Thus it is said. There are also other discriminations. Some water monsters realize that they live by swimming in the water. Then, two fishermen appeared in that place. Then, the water monster transformed into the form of fire and asked them two: Who are you? What do you want to do? The two of them said: Now know that we are fishermen. We came because we lost our nets. He said: If so, let one of you two be in charge of making the fire, and the second one be in charge of cooking. I will give fish as alms. In this way, our food will be successfully completed without hindrance. The two of them also agreed, saying: Yes, that's right, and diligently did their respective jobs. Just as the water monster's job is to collect fish, the job of greed is to collect everything. Just as the second person's job is to cook, the job of anger is to fight. When fighting, one cooks others with unpleasantness and harm, and so on. Just as the third person's job is to make the fire, so is the job of delusion. It blows like wind through all things, nourishing both greed and hatred. Just as wind, being contradictory due to its different nature, contradicts fire and water, yet can generate extreme coldness and warmth, so too, delusion can generate extreme attachment and hatred in greed and hatred, which are different in nature. Here it is said: Attachment makes one cling to women, and hatred destroys loving-kindness.
