It generates the clinging that one possesses the happiness of the wealthy. Just as vomiting with a golden vessel or an earthenware vessel, the suffering of those two kinds of vomiting is without happiness, similarly, ordinary individuals who lack learning also think that counteracting suffering is happiness from what is inverted, just like being stung by a horsefly. Just as some think that the suffering of being stung by a horsefly can be pacified, and therefore they crave being stung, so too, the unwise perceive happiness in counteracting suffering. Here it is said, for example, a person shifts a load from one shoulder to the other, and therefore thinks that this is happiness, but if it were not happiness, they would not shift it. Therefore, there is also happiness. It should be declared: If it changes due to the arising of fabrication, what happiness is there in the fabrication of suffering? Therefore, the Sage said that arising and ceasing, etc., are the nature of suffering. One who desires happiness, having completely generated aversion to the object, and having become accustomed to it excessively, experiences great suffering, with the desire to extinguish it, begins to enjoy the object that can experience happiness. There, ultimately, great suffering will also arise, so at the time of fabrication, one also knows that small suffering has already arisen. That small suffering that has arisen is also the cause of extinguishing the previous fatigue, so when fabricating small suffering, the previously arisen suffering will cease. The word 'arising' is the extreme expression of increase. Therefore, the meaning of the words is that by the arising of small suffering, one will fear great suffering. In both the states of arising and ceasing, it is said that happiness is impossible. What happiness is there in the fabrication of suffering? The meaning is that when fabricating suffering, there is no happiness whatsoever. The tone of འང་ (Tibetan) is, what happiness is there even when suffering is extinguished? Because it is merely the arising and ceasing of suffering, in both states, there is inherently no happiness at all. Perceiving happiness is transforming by taking what is inverted as the standard. This also explains the example of the porter. Because when analyzing in that way, happiness...

Because there is absolutely nothing that exists, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, said, "Katyayana's son, even at birth, only suffering arises, and at cessation, only suffering ceases." I think so. Here it is said: Children, in that creation of suffering, manifestly pride themselves on thinking it is happiness. If that were truly happiness, then it would not itself become suffering. It is like being bound by a binding of spear grass. Just as something bound by spear grass is destroyed by rain and sun, so by gathering fragments of suffering, creating other suffering, the former suffering is reversed. Here it is said: Even if suffering exists by its very nature, it is not visible because it is covered by happiness. It should be said: If the suffering of individual beings is not seen as if covered by happiness, then what obscures suffering? There is nothing called happiness. For what reason do these foolish individuals not see suffering? If there were something called happiness that is established by its very nature, then it could be said that the suffering covered by it is not visible. But, if after thorough examination, there is absolutely nothing called happiness, then how can something that does not exist obscure suffering? Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that happiness obscures suffering, just as one who falls halfway into a well relies on tasting honey, and a crow that enters the corpse of an elephant is chased away by a great river. Just as in the wilderness, chased by an elephant, one falls into an old well, and clings to the root of fragrant grass that is being eaten by mice halfway down, pursued from below by the great serpent Arjaka, pursued from the front by a large-bellied person, and tasting the dripping honey from above, relies on it, thinking oneself to be happy. Likewise, foolish beings in the wilderness of samsara, chased by the elephant of death, fall into the well of old age, and halfway through life, cling to the root of fragrant grass of the path of the ten virtuous actions, pursued from below by the great serpent Arjaka of the lower realms, and manifestly pursued from the front by the large-bellied person of afflictions of unwholesome thoughts, the fragrant grass of life.
