The answer should be sought from the Lotus Sutra and other scriptures. The commentary on the fourteenth chapter of the "Four Hundred Verses" by the venerable master Aryadeva, entitled "Showing the Meditation on Refuting the Grasping at Extremes." Here it is said: Conditioned phenomena exist by their very nature, because they have characteristics such as arising. For things that do not exist, such as donkey horns, there are no characteristics of conditioned phenomena, because conditioned phenomena have characteristics such as arising. Therefore, conditioned phenomena also exist. It should be explained: If at that time the characteristics become visible, then conditioned phenomena exist, but they are also not existent. How is that done? Here, when arising produces a conditioned phenomenon, does it produce a non-existent conditioned phenomenon or an existent one? To this, for the moment, according to those who say that the result does not exist, since there is no sprout in the state of the seed, therefore, from the collection of causes and conditions, a sprout arises from the last moment of the seed. Therefore, if the opponent says, "In the end, it will arise from nothing," if this statement is valid, then non-existence is also not reasonable to arise, because it would also lead to the arising of donkey horns, etc. For that very reason, it is said, "Then from what does nothing arise?" "Then" is because of the reason of non-existence itself. "From what" refers to the impossible, because it is non-existent, therefore there is no arising from nothing, that is its meaning. If, fearing this fault, one says that the result exists, thinking that it can only arise from existence, then, existence will arise from the beginning. Then, from what does existence arise? If one thinks that the sprout arises only in the earliest stage of arising, in the state of the seed, then it will not arise at that time, because it already exists. If one completely thinks that it arises from existence, then at that time arising will have no end, and for it, it will also become a repeated arising, so that is also impossible, therefore for existence, there is also no arising. Furthermore, the result destroys the cause. Therefore, nothing will not arise. Because when the sprout is arising, it des

Because the arising has been refuted, it is unreasonable to say that only non-existent sprouts arise from seeds. For example, the sprouts of rice, which are not present in barley and wheat, etc., do not arise through transformation. Similarly, because they are not existent, the seeds of rice do not arise through transformation either. If they arise in grains, like sesame seeds, etc., the seeds will also perish when the sprouts arise. Therefore, the non-existent does not arise. For the established, there is no establisher that can establish it. Therefore, the existent also does not arise. The sprout that has already been established will not be established again, so the existent also does not arise. Because the time of arising is impossible, it is said that arising is non-existent. To explain this, it is said: At that time, arising is non-existent; at other times, arising is non-existent. If it does not arise at that time or at other times, when will arising exist? When the sprout obtains its own nature, because it is the nature of the established, arising is impossible for it. When it is the nature of the unestablished, it should not arise either, because the unestablished itself is non-existent, and the action of arising without reliance will not occur, so arising is impossible at other times. If it is slightly established and slightly unestablished, the state of being established will also fall into the fault of being spoken of on both sides, so arising is impossible at that time and at other times. When arising is impossible in all three times, because there is no other different from it, when will there be arising? Thinking: Where will there be a time for it to arise? That time is non-existent. Here it is said: The transformation of milk into the nature of yogurt is arising. This is also unreasonable, because it is impossible for milk to have the nature of yogurt. Milk that temporarily abides in the nature of milk will not have its own arising, because it is the nature of milk there. Therefore, if that is the case: In that, in its own nature, how can arising exist? Similarly, in other natures, arising does not exist in it. Just as it is impossible for milk abiding in the nature of milk to arise, it is also impossible for milk to transform into the nature of other yogurt. From where will milk become yogurt?
