And dependent arising exists. Like the elephants and horses conjured by illusion, those inverted children completely grasp them as having inherent existence. But the noble ones, like illusion and mirage, completely determine that they are without inherent existence, just as they are. As it says in the sutra: Whether sentient beings, humans, or animals, here there is no birth or death. All dharmas are like illusions in nature, all are empty, and non-Buddhists cannot understand this. Likewise, all dharmas are like illusions, like dreams, and should be viewed like clouds. Analyzing the nature of dharma in this way, one abides perfectly, dwells well in dharma, and meditates. Whoever thinks of self and what belongs to self, and clings to subtle things in the same way, that unskilled clinging will be frightening, and will lead to attachment, hatred, and delusion. The sons of Shakya will realize the dharma of no self-nature, will realize dependent arising, and having a mind like the sky, seeing well, will not revolve again and will be liberated. Thus it is said. The teacher also relies on the wisdom of the noble ones, and in order to explain the fruit of analysis, he says: If that is so, how is it that existence is not like an illusion? This means that when dependent arising is seen as it is, it becomes like an illusion, not like the son of a barren woman. If it is thought that this analysis completely prevents birth, thereby showing that there is no created birth, then at that time it will not be like an illusion, but like the son of a barren woman and so on, which can be measured. Because of the fear of falling into a state where there is no dependent arising, one does not conform to those views, but one does not conform to illusions and so on that are not contradictory. Therefore, when the noble ones see that the illusion-like existence is without essence, because all attachment to the meaningless cycle of existence is completely exhausted, they will be liberated, so there is nothing unreasonable about this. This does not slander dependent arising, but is the establishment of the worldly.

Everything is imperishable, in order to achieve liberation by truly understanding it. Thus, having described conditioned things as being like illusions, it is explained in order to show that their characteristics are also not of an existing nature: Birth and abiding and destruction, occurring simultaneously is non-existent, occurring sequentially is also not, when will occurring exist? For the moment, because of mutual contradiction, birth and abiding and destruction occurring in a single instant is impossible. Occurring sequentially is also non-existent. Because there are no two and two, it is impossible for them to arise one by one. Because no other cause of establishment is seen other than sequential and simultaneous. When will occurring exist? This is said. Furthermore, these such as birth belong to the category of conditioned aggregates, therefore they are conditioned themselves. Therefore, it is necessary to establish other characteristics of conditioned things on them as well, in order to show this, it is explained: On all such as birth, again all arise, from that destruction is like birth, abiding appears like destruction. Such as birth, that is, for those who have accepted birth, abiding, and destruction as the nature of conditioned things, again all arise, if they arise again, then birth will become another birth. How does birth become another birth? From that destruction is like birth, destruction also has three characteristics because it is conditioned. Therefore, destruction also has another destruction, so it will become the destruction of destruction. Similarly, abiding also has the three characteristics of conditioned things, and it will become the abiding of abiding, so abiding appears like destruction. For those also, because they are conditioned, they must become other things, for those things are also other things, and for that also it becomes other things, so there is no end. If there is no end, then all things will not be established, so the characteristics of conditioned things do not exist by nature. Furthermore, when these characteristics arise, do they enter into the function of characteristics from a nature that is different from the characterized, or from a nature that is not different? Regarding this, for the moment, if the characteristic is different from the characterized, then from where does the impermanence of the characterized come?
