Just as heat and cold, pleasure and pain, etc., change and exist in the other when one does not exist, if the basis is also different from the characteristic, then impermanence itself will also cease to exist. Because conditioned things are impermanent, impermanence itself does not cease to exist, so this otherness is unreasonable. If you want to avoid this fault and think that the characteristic and the basis are not other, then at that time there will be other faults, like this: Or all four have it, It is not clear in essence. If you admit that the three characteristics and one basis are the same, then at that time all four, the three characteristics and the basis, will become non-entities. Why? Because if it is admitted here that they are the same, then the characteristic should not become the basis, and the basis should not become the characteristic, so all four will cease to exist. Or, because one's own essence is not established, one should not admit it as thatness and otherness. Here it is said: Birth etc. are existent, because they have a cause for their reason. The wise explain that sprouts etc. arise depending on this and that collection of causes. If birth etc. do not exist, then the collection of causes will become meaningless, but it is not meaningless. Therefore, birth etc. are existent. It should be said that if something arises from something, then if it becomes birth etc., existence is also impossible, and it is said to show this: Things do not arise from things, things do not arise from non-things, things do not arise from non-things, non-things do not arise from things. For the time being, a thing, that is, the essence of an established sprout, cannot arise from a thing, that is, a seed that has not transformed, because a seed that has not transformed cannot be a producer. Moreover, an established thing, that is, a sprout, cannot produce the essence of a thing again, so a thing does not arise from a thing. A thing also does not arise from a non-thing, because a non-thing, that is, a seed burned by fire, has no ability to produce fruit, and has the essence of production.
