In some place, an unpleasant thing existed. He cut it in half with a sharp knife, and then it became two. He cut those two as well, and they became four. In this way, it multiplied twofold. Then, that person's old friend, a deity, said from the sky, "This woman riding in the chariot should be killed, for if she is killed, all the flesh-eating women will be killed." He did just as he was told. Thus, by observing suffering and impermanence, he relinquished excessive attachment to the body, and one should strive to prevent the body from arising, for without it, all suffering will cease. Here it is said: Even if people's suffering arises solely from the body, it is still worthwhile to strive for it, because one can experience great pleasure, such as food, drink, bedding, cushions, and vehicles, etc. The pursuit of all these enjoyments is not only the cause of alleviating suffering, but also the cause of great happiness. Therefore, since suffering is very small and pleasure is very great, one should not be entirely afraid of suffering. It should be said: One should indeed fear suffering, like this: When pleasure, like suffering, does not occur to people most of the time, Then, for that great suffering, Will one think it is small? When suffering arises in the body, it arises intensely and abundantly, but pleasure is not like that. This is well known in the world, for example, whether Deva is lying or sitting on a bed with a soft cushion, fully relying on pleasing sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches, even if pleasure has completely permeated oneself, when a bee pierces with its sharp, needle-like proboscis, one suddenly hates all those pleasures and becomes depressed by suffering. Similarly, for those things that would cause extreme pleasure, due to attachment to them, even leading to bones breaking and hearts tearing, such as in the case of a beloved child dying, that

Even a sixteenth of the suffering arising from a toothache is unbearable! Therefore, even if there is happiness overwhelmed by great suffering, it does not help. If happiness were to become very great, then it would not be overwhelmed by suffering, as small things do not overwhelm large things. Therefore, the idea that the body has great happiness and little suffering is incorrect. Here it says: Whatever is very strong in power, and overwhelms others, that is not small; whatever is overwhelmed by the power of others, that is great, one should not say. Therefore, if that is the case, even the suffering brought about by external circumstances, one should not say that the body, which has become suffering, has very little suffering and is even happy, just like a musical instrument that has its sound stolen. Just as great suffering steals the sound of a musical instrument, but there is not even a small amount of happiness on it. Similarly, even those who are drowning in the mud of the river of suffering think of samsara as happiness. Because it is overwhelmed by suffering and becomes small. People clearly tend towards happiness, and even what can become happiness is difficult to obtain. People who desire happiness and are incompatible with suffering may flee from suffering, but even so, they cannot achieve happiness in a body that has the same taste as suffering. The more people clearly desire happiness, the farther happiness becomes from them, and only suffering appears, because they approach the cause of suffering with the hope of happiness. Therefore, those who possess happiness are very rare. Because this is like this, therefore, for this person who is about to perish, it is like chasing after suffering. Just as a person's shadow follows them, even if they flee from suffering, suffering follows them, because nature cannot be abandoned. It is like an elephant hiding in a well, some elephants are so drunk and without a hook, no matter how they are driven, they will hide in the well, and have already reached halfway into the well.

I think of liberation, but just as being chased by a drunken elephant only leads to being bound, so too does the world, always connected with suffering, become possessed of a perception of happiness due to ignorance. Here it says: Here, a person who has become impoverished abandons happiness in an instant, like another. Even for a sentient being who is dying, suffering follows like a shadow. Therefore, this is indeed so, because suffering is obtained through desire, how could happiness come from desire? Suffering is always near, and what is not near is not to be accomplished through great effort, so suffering is obtained when desired. Happiness is not obtained through desire, because it is very rare in a body that is the nature of suffering, like cold during the day and night. This world does not fear suffering that is always near, and suffering also comes from non-virtuous actions, and the world that hopes for a small portion of happiness engages greatly in actions that are the fruit of suffering, therefore it is said to prevent it: Why do you respect what is scarce, and why are you not afraid of what is abundant? Here, suffering, at what time, in what manner, and how much is obtained independently through desire, happiness is not like that, because it depends on others, and if it cannot be obtained through desire, then, in the world, people respect happiness that is difficult to obtain due to attachment and depends on others, but fools do not fear suffering that is easy to obtain and is independent. Since happiness is rare but should be desired, why are you not disgusted with the abundant suffering that should be abandoned? In all respects, effort that is in accordance with one's nature is reasonable. Therefore, one should abandon non-virtue. Therefore, if that is the case, suffering alone is the master of the world precisely because it is independent, and not happiness, like digging up treasure. Just as obtaining suffering through one's own desire from plundering the king's treasure, happiness is not like that. Here, this world is unknowing, and even if familiar, it does not fear suffering.
