For that which is certain to exist, namely death, having completely abandoned worldly affairs, and also completely relinquished the attachment of craving for the very life that must be protected, therefore, for a while, there is no fear even of the Lord of Death. How then could there be fear of going to the forest or being separated from one's children? Therefore, one should strive to cultivate mindfulness of death, just as one puts on a ring to remove poison, and completely abandons food mixed with poison. Just as one puts on a ring on the hand to remove poison, so too, the wise cultivate the perception of impermanence in order to destroy the poison of afflictions. And just as completely abandoning food mixed with poison brings auspiciousness, so too, completely abandoning all attachments will certainly bring well-being. From the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practices of a Bodhisattva by the Venerable Master Aryadeva, the explanation of the method for constantly abandoning perverted views, is the commentary on the first chapter. In short, the first chapter has explained the method of abandoning the perverted view of clinging to permanence in impermanence through cultivating impermanence. Now, we will explain the method of abandoning the perverted view of clinging to happiness in suffering through cultivating suffering. Though the body is seen as an enemy, yet it should be diligently guarded. One who lives long with morality can thereby create great merit. Because the body is the source of suffering caused by four hundred and four diseases arising from internal imbalances of the elements, and from external sources such as mosquitoes, wasps, swords, cold, heat, flesh flies, long-beaked mosquitoes, scorpions, snakes, and so on. Therefore, in order not to generate many sufferings, to seek opportunities, and because it is difficult to rely on, the noble ones, who contemplate the nature of things as they are, see the body as an enemy. If that is the case, then it should not be protected, because it would strengthen the enemy's power? Even so, it should still be protected, because it is necessary. What is that necessity? It is that by relying on the body, one can accumulate all collections of virtuous roots.

In this way, if one possesses this body, then at the time of long life and possessing discipline, one can perform great merit, but if one does not have a body, it is not so. Therefore, it should be protected for a while. On the other hand, just because of the words of impermanence that have just been reduced to ashes, one becomes discouraged, and thinking, "What is the use of this body that leads to meaningless things?" one despises it. In order to completely avoid that contempt, it is said that "the body is like an enemy," etc., and that explanation should be combined. It is like the life of a merchant's son and a thief connected by death. Just as "I am bound," etc., if I go somewhere, I will not receive help, the merchant's son and the thief are bound by one rope, and even if they are imprisoned, they will take care of each other. Similarly, in order to fully accomplish the cause of obtaining heaven and liberation, the body should also be regarded as being for the purpose of fully perfecting the accumulation of merit and wisdom. Here: Just as for one's own benefit, one binds, And protects a thief connected by one rope. Similarly, the wise treat the body, In order to increase discipline, etc. It will become like this. Someone says that if the body is killed, then one should be close to it. It should be said: People's suffering arises from the body itself, But happiness comes from elsewhere. Why do you respect the, Abdomen, which has become the vessel of all suffering? In this way, whatever slight suffering such as hunger and thirst arises in the body, it is only from the body, and not from elsewhere. And whatever slight happiness arises in the body, it is only from elsewhere, and not from the body. Therefore, one should not respect this body, which is the vessel of all suffering, but should nourish it only in a moderate way that allows one to live, increase virtue, and not generate evil. Like being attached to a flesh-eating woman in a solitary place. In front of some people who entered a solitary place, a flesh-eating woman manifested as a beautiful woman, showing herself to be old and helpless, and resided there, and then she blamed that person. Not long after that, that flesh-eating woman
