If it exists, it would fall into the fault of being permanent. If it does not exist, then it is impossible for a consciousness with its image to arise, therefore, a consciousness with its image as an object will not arise again, and then, with what kind of consciousness will that memory be associated? Furthermore, is there no memory with a past object as its object? Who would say that there is none? We are not negating dependent arising. How does it exist? Therefore, the teacher himself establishes it thus: Memory is called inverted, only inversion arises in meaning. Therefore, the object of memory is a past object. If it exists by its own nature, then at that time, memory is based on the meaning of existence, and if it is established by its own nature, then when the past object is without self-nature, the memory based on it is also without self-nature, therefore, it is established that it is inverted. The meaning of inverted is without self-nature, and dependent arising, it is not another meaning, the meaning of no object is not the meaning of inverted. The past object is not non-existent in all aspects, because it is to be remembered, and because its fruit is seen. It is also not existent by its own nature, because it would fall into the fault of being permanent, and it would fall into the fault of grasping as real. When it arises from such an object, memory is also such, therefore, it is established that: Memory is called inverted, only inversion arises in meaning. Just like remembering the object experienced in a dream state in a waking state. The eleventh chapter of the "Four Hundred Verses on the Bodhisattva's Practice" by the teacher Aryadeva, called "Explanation of the Meditation on the Refutation of Time." Here it is said: You have clearly and extensively explained this selflessness, and the Tathagata is also one who understands this and is good at guiding, then why do most people in the world not accept this Dharma? Because this Dharma is extremely [esteemed] by the author, the explainer, and the great nature of the Dharma.
