It is the agent, and from this, fruit arises, as it is said. Furthermore, if the fruit called "sprout" has already arisen, but the seed still exists in its own nature, and the seed has not changed, then because it is seen that the seed has not changed, it will be considered permanent. But this is not the case, because it is seen that the seed has changed. If the seed does not change, then another sprout will arise from it, but this is also not the case. Because things are impermanent, they are not permanent. Moreover, since self-nature is not established, the distinction between whether the seed and the sprout are the same or different cannot be established, therefore the absence of self-nature of things is very clearly established. In the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice of Bodhisattvas by the teacher Aryadeva, the tenth chapter called "Refutation of Self-Grasping" is explained. Here, the proponents of time say that because it is seen that forms and so on arise from other sources, and because it is not manifest to the world, and because no fruit is seen, it cannot be understood by inference, therefore the self is not existent, what they say is well said. But it is not the case that permanent things do not exist in any way, because time exists. From here, earth, water, fire, wind, space, and seeds and so on exist, but sometimes the arising and ceasing of sprouts and flowers and so on do not exist, and if they sometimes arise, then the fruit called time is inferred from seeing it. It can be clarified by moments, instants, and so on, and they say that apart from things that abide in the three times, past, future, and present, there is a permanent time. To this it should be objected that if what is called time is different from things and exists as established by its own nature, then it would become the cause of arising and ceasing. But this is not the case, because it would lead to the fault of clinging to being different from things. If something exists in things, the phenomena of entering and leaving will also appear, then it will be influenced by other factors, therefore it will also become a fruit.

Since actions and the like have already been blocked, there is also no cause for entering and leaving at the time established by its own characteristics. Furthermore, those three times that are distinguished as the essence of the difference of time, since they themselves are not sentient beings, they cannot necessarily be determined from their own nature, therefore they cannot be distinguished by their own essence, but they can be distinguished by the difference of the objects to be indicated by them, such as vases and the like. These are natures that are different from objects, and are not like the way of experiencing feelings and the like, nor are they to be completely determined by the senses like form and sound and the like. Therefore, since their differences are completely determined only through vases and the like, by negating the three times through this method, they consider this to be negating time, so it is said: The future vase and the present vase, are not existent, nor are they past. Because those two are future, therefore the future does not exist. In order to indicate that the future time is near, the future vase is placed near. Similarly, in order to indicate that the past and present times are near, the past and present vases are placed near. Thus, the future is the time that has not reached the present. The past is the time that has already passed. The present is the time that has arisen but has not stopped. The present is the main one, because the present is the object of focus. There, the distinction between future and past times by the future and the Vaiśeṣikas is not the main one. These three times also exist in mutual dependence, because if they are not mutually dependent, then each one cannot exist. If one does not rely on the past and the present, one cannot distinguish the future, because the future, with its own essence of the future, will inevitably become the two times of the past and the present. If it does not exist, then from where will the future become the future itself? The distinction of the other two times should also be applied similarly to this. Therefore, whatever is the future vase, it is not the present vase, nor is it the past vase, because the characteristics are different, and one cannot become the other. When it is like that,
