Just as water drips from crystal, and sprouts and the like emerge from seeds and the like, and from the great elements such as moisture, how do they gradually rise upwards, become soft, become round, become hard, stretch out legs and feet, stretch out arms and hands, and from this, eyes and the like are also observed. Thus, form is observed to arise from elsewhere. Furthermore, if all these have me as the agent, then the absorption into this form depends solely on that, what is the use of examining other causes? If one thinks that the other cause also arises solely from me, then why is it not seen that way? If it is said that it is because there is no indication, then do eyes and the like rely on indication when they enter their own objects, or not? If not, then there is no need for indication to observe that thing. If it is said that the initial absorption comes from me, then does that self have a beginning or not? If so, then its result must also be without beginning. If it exists, but it was not the cause before, then who made it the cause later? If it relies on another thing, then that thing is the cause of its cause, so it will become a transmission of causes, because the cause of that cause has another cause, and that also has another, so the causes will become endless. Therefore, since movement and absorption arise only from causes, what is the use of examining me as the cause, this is meaningless. If one fully contemplates that the cause also depends on me to arise, then in that case, the cause simultaneous with me depends on absorption. Therefore, like me, its result will also be without beginning. If it is simultaneous, then the entity of cause and effect is not reasonable between me and its result. What exists does not arise, because both exist at that time, so who creates whom? Therefore, the absorption of form should not have me as its cause. Therefore, since one sees form arising from elsewhere in this way, who, without being inverted, would fully contemplate me for the purpose of creating it? Or one should also examine whether the son of a barren woman and the like are the agents for movement and absorption.

If we see that form arises from other things, then similarly, its existence also seems to depend on other things. Because we see that from fuel such as firewood, things like fire arise. It also seems to perish from other things, such as from the cause of the firewood being exhausted. If we assume the existence of a permanent self that goes from being visible to invisible, it contradicts the facts. Moreover, it is unreasonable to investigate things unrelated to causes. Therefore, it does not exist by its own nature. When something permanent cannot arise, then in the world, just as a sprout arises from a seed, all impermanent things also arise from impermanent things. Just as a seed that arises dependent on causes and conditions is not established by its own nature, but arises as a sprout due to dependent origination, it does not exist by itself, but is without self-nature and empty of self-nature. Similarly, the wise should ascertain that this example also applies to other things, whether they are gross or subtle things where the relationship between cause and effect is not obvious, or non-form things such as feelings, and even unconditioned phenomena that are beyond causes, actions, and afflictions, all arise from causes that are without self-nature, resulting in effects that are without self-nature. If this is the case, then for conditioned phenomena, the vajra thunderbolt of eternalism and nihilism, and the relationship between cause and effect in both worldly and transcendent realms, will be completely destroyed. Therefore, the wise should declare that through the mantra of dependent origination, it can be averted from a great distance. Because things arise, they will not be annihilated. Because things decline, they will not be permanent. Things are of the nature of arising and ceasing, that is, the effect, such as a sprout. Because the effect called a sprout arises from the cause called a seed, the cause called a seed will not be annihilated. If the seed were to perish without producing a continuation of sprouts, etc., like when it encounters fire, then one would fall into nihilistic views. However, since we see sprouts, etc., arising, it is impossible for the cause called a seed to be annihilated. The second instance of the word "thing" in the verse refers to the cause.
