If, like that, one comprehends dependent arising as devoid of inherent existence, undoubtedly one will cross from the river of views such as eternalism and nihilism, which is a great wave stirred and agitated by the winds of improper attention, with the boat of knowing dependent arising, and reach the garden of nirvana, adorned with groves of trees of the Buddha's unadulterated Dharma, possessing various delightful jewels of the limbs of enlightenment, being stainless with the ten powers, having gone to bliss in solitude by knowing cessation and non-arising, and also exhorting others who follow to proclaim the secret of dependent arising, striving to accomplish the teacher's instructions, one will surely liberate those who are in the great ocean of samsara, confused by the rivers of views such as eternalism. Those who have not comprehended this nature of dependent arising, and who completely grasp the self-characteristics of phenomena, if they hold to things as real, will undoubtedly produce: Attachment and hatred arise, Intolerable and fierce views are held, From that, disputes arise. Among these, attachment is the characteristic of manifestly clinging to one's own side. Hatred is the characteristic of turning one's back on the other side. That which arises from attachment and hatred is the arising of attachment and hatred. Because the ripening is extremely unpleasant and extremely difficult to endure, it is intolerable. It harms the mind-stream and is difficult to overcome, therefore it is fierce, and what is that? It is the clinging to views. Being in a view, this kind of view also arises from grasping at things as real. If there is clinging to views, because one wants to show the meaning that one has accepted, and because one wants to negate what others have accepted, therefore disputes arise from clinging to views, and other disputes that arise from the root of clinging to things as real will also arise. For what reason does that happen? Because that is the cause of all views, Without that, afflictions do not arise, Therefore, if one fully knows that, Views and afflictions are completely eliminated. If one clings to things as real, that is the past extreme and the future extreme.

And completely grasping it with conceptual thought, all those that become the object of observation will have downfalls, therefore, grasping at substantiality is the cause of all views. If there is a view, then afflictions arising from that cause will arise, because attachment arises towards one's own view, and thereby becomes arrogant, and hatred arises towards the views of others, and in everything, ignorance arises, so afflictions arise from views. Because in this way, all views and afflictions arise from the cause of focusing on substantiality, therefore, one should completely understand substantiality, if one truly understands the self-nature of substantiality, because there is no focus, all views will cease. When it ceases, all afflictions will be abandoned. If someone thinks like this: Who will understand it? (Verse) Seeing dependent arising, knowing birth as non-birth, is what the Sugata said. (Explanation) Having seen dependent arising, one will not grasp things as self-nature. Whatever arises dependently, like an image, is not born of self-nature. Whatever arises dependently is definitely arisen, how can one give it the name "unborn"? If it is said to be unborn, then it should not be dependently arisen, therefore, because it is self-contradictory, it is not reasonable, if someone says this. Alas, how pitiful, even without ears and a heart, they come to find fault with me, this is terrible. Whatever arises dependently, like an image, is not born of self-nature, when did I say such a thing, when is there an opportunity to find fault with me? The aspect of whatever arises dependently, the false object taken by its image, I say is unborn. I am the one who establishes its non-arising, and it is precisely that one who says its non-birth. I am the one who establishes its non-birth, it is established with the truly existing self-nature, not with the false self-nature, because that self-nature has already acknowledged dependent arising. Therefore, in this way, birth and non-birth, these two, on the object
