Commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning by Chandrakirti Commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning Chandrakirti In Indian language: Yuktiṣaṣṭika-vṛtti. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning. Homage to Mañjuśrī, the courageous one of wisdom! Following the path of reasoning of the Victorious Ones, the sixty stanzas on reasoning that dispel the two extremes, I pay homage to the one who composed them, and I shall explain them according to the Madhyamaka approach. Here, this teacher has attained the distinction of delight by seeing exactly how dependent arising abides. Knowing that understanding this is the basis of supreme faith, from seeing dependent arising, all collections of virtue of the world and beyond arise, all noble beings arise, and the Buddhas, the Bhagavat who possess unobstructed wisdom, also seeing that they perfectly awaken to that very nature in all aspects, because dependent arising is unproduced by its own nature, it is at the extremes of arising and ceasing, existence and non-existence. Undefiled by the stain of conceptualization, dependent arising is emptiness by its very nature, and having proclaimed it with greatness, he wishes to explain dependent arising. Having generated respect for the Tathagata who teaches it, who has become non-different from the very nature of dependent arising, he begins to pay homage to him. Those who have abandoned birth and destruction, By means of this reasoning, To the Lord of Sages who taught dependent arising, I pay homage. Thus, he begins to pay homage. Why is it that the teacher did not express praise in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness and the Refutation of Disputes, but expresses it in this Madhyamaka? He says: The Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness and the Refutation of Disputes both arise from the Madhyamaka treatises. Since their own lineage is not separate, praise is not expressed separately. Thus, the Refutation of Disputes is: The nature of things, Is without conditions, etc., There is no self-thing, Is there another thing? The Refutation of Disputes is an argument and response to that, so it is clear that it arises from that. Like illusion, like a dream, a city of gandharvas.

What is it like? Just as it is born, just as it abides, Just as it is said to perish. The Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness is clearly derived from it because it has been debated and answered. This Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, like the Middle Way, also primarily starts from examining dependent origination. Because it is done in this way, it is not like being derived from the Middle Way. Those who speak of self-nature and Ishvara, etc., Acknowledge that the arising and ceasing of beings, etc., come from self-nature, Ishvara, nature, purusha, time, and the son of the desireless one, etc., Having abandoned all these, even if they want to go to the city of nirvana, they are lost because they see the two truths upside down, Just like turning away, they cannot go for a long time to the city of nirvana, which is characterized by the cessation of samsara. The teaching of dependent origination, this mere condition, Because it becomes the cause of seeing the two truths without inversion, all noble beings have gone and will go, it is the first incomparable one, Having completely abandoned all conditioned phenomena, It is the great one who solely inclines towards the city of nirvana. Therefore, because he teaches it, he is the supreme teacher who is the complete master of the inexhaustible accumulation of merit and wisdom, Because he is the chief of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, etc., he is not pleased with the King of Sages, but recognizes that he is the King of Sages only because he teaches dependent origination. Therefore, it is said: "To the King of Sages who speaks of dependent origination, I pay homage." Dependent origination is not non-independent. Speaking of dependent origination is the cause of becoming the King of Sages. Becoming the King of Sages is also the cause of speaking of dependent origination, Because others cannot explain dependent origination. The Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas can also explain it because it is taught by the King of Sages. If it is said that because they are mutually dependent, neither can be established, The reply is, for example, mutually dependent
