That which is said to be unborn and unceasing by its very nature is dependent arising; those who speak of this as emptiness agree. It is not merely because he speaks of dependent arising that he became the Lord of Sages; but when he speaks of the way things are established in dependence on one another, he prevents the arising and ceasing of things. "By what" means the cause; by this also the non-duality is shown, therefore, having seen the unsurpassed teacher, the Lord of Sages, he said, "I prostrate to that Lord of Sages." Or, in what way does the Lord of Sages speak of dependent arising? It is this very mode of dependent arising. By this order, the arising and ceasing of things is prevented, therefore, I prostrate to that Lord of Sages. Or, "by what" means only the cause; because when the Lord of Sages shows the dependent arising of things, by nature he prevents the arising and ceasing of things, therefore, I prostrate to that Lord of Sages. This is the concluding word for the sake of greatly benefiting all the worlds. Or, relying on the words of the Lord of Sages that will appear below, having seen that the arrangement in one's own mind is established, he said, "Those who have completely abandoned arising and ceasing, by this means." Therefore, I prostrate to that Lord of Sages of dependent arising. Here it is said: This way of your words is unprecedented; speaking of dependent arising cannot show that there is no arising and ceasing; if one says, "Your son is born," then it will not be said, "Your son is not born," likewise, this is also unreasonable. Explanation: If, combined with the dimness of ignorance causing the eye of wisdom to fail, one examines that the sound of dependent arising does not become words of unborn and unceasing by nature, then there is no fault at all, please realize! Like a child to an image, those children who are attached to the appearance of things' own nature, even though the nature of things does not exist, they are still unable to realize it; while the wise are like the wise to an image,

In order to show that one is able to clearly understand that all phenomena are without inherent existence, it is said: Those who transcend the notions of existence and non-existence, and do not abide in either extreme, they meditate on the meaning of profound, signless dependent origination. Those who have been accustomed to emptiness in past lives are powerful because they have the seeds to understand dependent origination and see emptiness. Even if the habits of those born in the present are not so strong, the profound dependent origination, which is not within the realm of the minds of ordinary people, is not tainted by the defilements of thoughts of existence and non-existence, is understood by noble beings such as Shariputra. Just as the world arises with karma and afflictions as the cause, possessing the cause of action, the teacher also well explained the cause of the cessation of karma and afflictions. Wherever the suffering of birth, old age, and decay certainly does not remain, the lion of speakers who proclaims this supreme liberation has spoken of what he himself has realized. Merely by hearing these verses, the noble Shariputra was able to realize and arise. Therefore, by the power of past habituation, their minds transcend seeing existence and non-existence. Because there is no middle ground beyond these two extremes, there is also no abiding in it, so it is non-abiding. For ordinary people, this is frightening, and they cannot enter, so it is profound. Because it is not self-existent, it is impossible to take the extremes and the middle of existence and non-existence as objects of contemplation, so it is signless. These noble beings meditate on the meaning of dependent origination, which is a synonym for realizing wisdom. Non-noble beings, who are extremely inverted, cannot understand the meaning of dependent origination in this way, because merely the sound of dependent origination manifests attachment to self-existence, so they refute those who proclaim emptiness and strive to find the reasoning to prove it, therefore it is said here: By what reason can one apprehend dependent origination and examine that existence is also non-existence? For what reason do the noble ones apprehend dependent origination with a wisdom that transcends the view of existence and non-existence?
