Thus it is said. The term "this arising from that" is a synonym for relying on this and that. The term "this and that" is to encompass all imputations in general, therefore this term includes internal ignorance and so on, and external wind circles and so on, all of which become the cause of arising for formations and so on, and water circles and so on, existing as causal entities. If that which arises depends on that cause, if it is something established by its own nature, then because of its existence, just as at the time of the established nature, the arising result would not need to depend on anything. If the arising thing previously did not have its own nature, then the arising thing also appears not to exist by its own nature, like a reflection. Therefore, it is said, "When this arises, that arises; in reality, it is not born." If the arising thing does not exist by its own nature, but nominally, form has arisen, feeling has arisen, if one thinks that arising exists in this way, then alas, one has undoubtedly gone astray. The wise should analyze with impartial wisdom, contemplating the reason within. That which is not born in its own nature, how can it be said to be born? The nature of earth is subtle, if one thinks that it is not born with its own nature, then one cannot infer that it is born as the nature of moisture, then what else would it be born as? Therefore, it is impossible for arising to occur from self and other, so it is established that there is no arising. Thus, having shown that arising is impossible in dependent origination, now wanting to show that cessation is impossible, therefore it is said, "Due to the exhaustion of causes, there is peace; it appears as exhausted; in reality, it is not exhausted; what is said to be exhausted?" If the arising thing has arising, then it will perish, and the existence of things also depends on conditions, if there are no conditions for existence, it will perish, in this way, whatever is exhausted and pacified and nirvana in the world, that is peace. Anything that perishes without conditions for existence depends on the absence of conditions for existence, therefore realizing that it is not established by its own nature. Therefore, it is said, "In reality, it is not exhausted; what is said to be exhausted?" If there exists something that is exhausted by its own nature, then

It does not depend on conditions. It changes from the complete exhaustion of the cause. Therefore, even if the substance of karma and afflictions has not disappeared, it will attain nirvana, so liberation will be attained without effort. If it is said that the lamp will go out before the ghee and wick are completely exhausted, that is not the case, because there is no cessation that is established by its own nature. If the complete exhaustion of ghee and wick is not the cause of the lamp's extinction, then why is that? The ghee and wick cease together, and the last moment of the lamp, because there is no cause to produce the future moment of the lamp of that kind, it does not transform into the substance of the limb of birth, and therefore it does not cease. The future also does not arise because there is no condition for birth. Therefore, it is said that because there is no future condition, there is no birth for this. If you think like this, then, if the absence of a future condition becomes the cause of non-birth, then, if there is no condition, it will definitely be born. In this way, non-birth is also acknowledged as a cause. If this is acknowledged, then the peace after the exhaustion of the cause is acknowledged as exhaustion. Those who hold that the cessation of things is without cause, their cessation does not depend on things, like flowers in the sky and so on, because it is without cause. If it is said that because there are no things, pottery and so on are also not interdependent, then those also depend on things, therefore, those are also not uniquely determined. But in the world, having a cause is recognized, so it is not like those. Or, those also, like cessation, will have the fault of not depending on things. If you say, how can you call non-existence a cause? Then, how can you call existence a cause? When the seed exists, it cannot be recognized as the substance of the cause of the sprout, it becomes the cause when it becomes non-existent. For example, just as it is admitted that the consciousness that becomes non-existent is the immediately preceding condition for another consciousness, when that consciousness exists, it cannot be said that it is the cause of another consciousness. Because two consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously.
