Thus it is said, namely the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons. Furthermore, why are the two types of selflessness taught closely? Explanation: It is for the sake of liberating beings. These two types of selflessness are taught closely by the Bhagavan for the purpose of completely liberating beings. Among them, the selflessness of persons is taught for the sake of completely liberating the solitary Buddhas and the Hearers, while for the Bodhisattvas, both are taught for the sake of completely liberating them by attaining omniscience. Although the Hearers and solitary Buddhas only see this much, namely dependent origination and causes, even so, they do not have the complete cultivation of the selflessness of phenomena. They only have a method for abandoning the afflictions that operate in the three realms. For them, the complete cultivation of the selflessness of persons is established. Thus, the Teacher again, this very thing, for those to be tamed, is divided and spoken of in many ways. These two types of selflessness are again taught many times by the Bhagavan with various intentions of those to be tamed. Among them, emptiness with elaboration, having explained sixteen emptinesses, then summarized, and again explained four, these are also accepted in the Great Vehicle. As it is said: Subhuti, furthermore, this Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is as follows: internal emptiness, external emptiness, internal-external emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness without abandonment, self-nature emptiness, emptiness of all dharmas, self-characteristic emptiness, imperceptible emptiness, emptiness of the nature of non-things. Thus, having taught sixteen emptinesses, Subhuti, furthermore, a thing is empty of a thing, a non-thing is empty of a non-thing, self-nature is empty of self-nature, other things are empty of other things. Thus, having again taught four emptinesses, empti

These themselves are called the Great Vehicle. Emptiness or non-emptiness does not exist at all, it is merely that in this way, according to the capacity of the beings to be tamed, like form and so on, it is merely a conventional designation. As it is said in the scriptures: If non-emptiness exists slightly, emptiness will also exist slightly. If non-emptiness does not exist slightly, how can emptiness exist? Emptiness is not spoken, non-emptiness is not done, two and non-two are not done, it is said for the sake of designation. Thus it is said. Among them, speaking in terms of inner emptiness: Because its own nature is like that, therefore the eye is empty of the eye. Likewise, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind should also be declared. Because it is not constantly existing, nor is it destroyed. Whatever is the selflessness of the six, such as the eye, that is considered inner emptiness. As it is said: Among them, when which become inner emptiness, which are the inner dharmas? The so-called inner dharmas are eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Among them, because it is not constantly existing, nor is it destroyed. The eye is empty of the eye, why is that? Because its own nature is like that. Like this, it is extensively said. Among them, not constantly existing refers to not abandoning its own nature. Moreover, because it exists for a short time and then disappears, it is said that it is not destroyed. It will be explained in this way that anything that has its own nature must necessarily be impermanent and immutable. As it is said: Own nature from causes and conditions, it is not reasonable to arise. Arising from causes and conditions, own nature becomes created. Own nature is created, how can it be established? Own nature is uncreated, not dependent on others. Thus it is said. Furthermore, what is it that the teacher particularly elucidates in the treatises, is such a nature acknowledged by the teacher? Based on what, the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One

Whether they appear or not, the suchness of phenomena, this is the very nature of abiding, as extensively stated, the so-called suchness exists. What is this so-called suchness? It is the nature of these, such as the eye. What is the nature of these? That which is uncreated and independent of others, the self-nature to be realized by the wisdom free from the darkness of ignorance. Does it exist or not? Thus it is said. If it does not exist, then for what reason do Bodhisattvas cultivate the path of the perfections? It is because of realizing that suchness. Bodhisattvas thus engage in hundreds of thousands of hardships. As it is said: Son of noble family, the ultimate truth is unborn, unceasing, indestructible, uncoming, ungoing, not to be expressed by letters, not to be fully explained by letters, and not to be realized by conceptual proliferation. Son of noble family, the ultimate truth is inexpressible and peaceful, to be individually understood by the noble ones themselves. Son of noble family, the ultimate truth is whether the Tathāgatas appear or not, for what reason do Bodhisattvas shave their hair and beards, wear saffron robes, and with genuine faith go forth from home to homelessness, and having gone forth, in order to attain that Dharma, they exert diligence as if their hair or clothes were on fire, abiding without turning back. Son of noble family, if the ultimate truth did not exist, then there would be no pure conduct, and the appearance of the Tathāgatas would be meaningless. Because the ultimate truth exists, therefore Bodhisattvas are called skilled in the ultimate truth. Thus it is said. Here it is said: Alas, you who do not desire even the slightest thing, yet desire the suddenly uncreated, the self-nature independent of others, you are speaking of contradictory meanings! It should be said that you do not understand the intention of the treatise. The intention here is, if the eye and so on rely on their own nature,
