Although Bodhisattvas have realized emptiness, they still hold onto the stream of desire until enlightenment due to compassion for others. Therefore, the wise should seek the emptiness that has been taught. Just as the imputation of oneself and what is close to oneself is similar to the analysis of a chariot, so it is with other things. To show that other things are also like this, it is said: "Pots, cloths, camps, armies, forests, rows of trees, houses, small carts, inns, and so on, whatever things there are." Thus it is said. By analyzing them in the manner of a chariot, they do not exist as seven aspects. But apart from that, they exist by way of worldly convention. This should be connected with this statement. Whatever other things are of that kind, and by whatever means they arise, those that are spoken of here should be understood as mere conventions without investigation. Why? Because the Buddha does not dispute with the world. As the scripture says, "The world disputes with me, but I do not dispute with the world." Therefore, one should not harm the conventions of the world. Furthermore, how does the world impute names to things? To show that, it is said: "Qualities, limbs, desire, nature, and firewood, and so on. Possessing qualities, possessing limbs, attachment, and the basis, fire, and so on, are the meanings." By analyzing them in the manner of a chariot, they do not exist as seven aspects. But apart from that, they exist by way of worldly convention. For example, a pot is something that possesses limbs, and shards and so on are its limbs. A pot is something that possesses qualities, and blue and green patterns and so on are its qualities. A pot is the basis of a nature, and a bulging belly, a drooping mouth, and a long neck and so on are its nature. Likewise, cloths and so on should also be applied in the same way. Desire is a special attachment. Attachment is the basis of desire. Fire is what burns. Firewood is what is burned. Thus, limbs are made the cause for imputing something as possessing limbs, and limbs are imputed in dependence on something possessing limbs, which is similar to the example of a chariot. Fire exists in dependence on firewood, and firewood exists in dependence on fire.
