Apart from the interval, what is your self? Thus it is said. The nature of arising and ceasing will change. From this inference of change, the teacher's view is that this is different from "this is not arising and ceasing." For this, constancy etc. also do not exist. Just as the teacher said when he fully realized the self by means of the Tathagata's examination: Where are the four such as permanence and impermanence in peace? Where are the four such as end and endlessness in peace? Whoever holds that the Tathagata exists, tightly grasping the dense clinging, that person has the thought of "non-existence" for Nirvana. The nature is empty, and after the Buddha's Nirvana, it is not reasonable to think of saying "exists" or "does not exist." Thus it is said. This is neither the self produced from the aggregates, nor the other. As it is said: If the aggregates are the self, there will be the nature of arising and ceasing. If it is different from the aggregates, there will be no characteristics of the aggregates. And similarly, wood itself is not fire. Thus it is said. Also, why are unstable thoughts, etc., not applicable to the self? It is said, "Because it is not real," if the self is some real nature, then unstable thoughts, etc., would exist, but the self is nothing, simply because it is empty. As it is said in the sutra: The four inconceivable dharmas are taught by the Protector of the World: sentient beings, space, bodhicitta, as well as the Buddha and the Dharma. If these are real, these will be completely exhausted. Because they do not exist, they will not be exhausted, therefore it is said that they are endless. Thus it is said. If one seeks with seven aspects, permanence and impermanence cannot exist, and not seeing its non-existence, clinging to it as existence due to ignorance, with the view of the corruptible collection, those who appear to cling to "this is me" will wander in samsara. For whom, the ego-grasping mind arises constantly for those who wander, and in whatever is there, the self in which the grasping of "I" arises, unexamined.

Coarseness is due to ignorance. Whatever is sought everywhere is not in accordance with the reasoning of the heretics, therefore all the reversed attachments to its nature are attached to being separate from the aggregates. Their own sects also mistakenly believe that being separate from the aggregates is selfless, therefore they only acknowledge the aggregates as self. Those who understand without reversing what the Tathagata has taught realize that this does not exist at all, and after recognizing this, they will be completely liberated a hundred times, that is the self. For beings such as humans, hungry ghosts, and animals, for all those who do not understand their state and are associated with it, the thought of clinging to me always arises, and it should be recognized that those are me. Wherever this can function or become some kind of connection, the cause of this designation, the inner nature of the eye, etc., and whatever is external, there arises the thought of clinging to me, that self is made of consciousness, but not made of its own nature. Because this does not exist, but because of the imputation of terms from ignorance, therefore yogis do not observe in any way, and even if they do not observe, the grasping of the eye, etc., will not arise. Thus, yogis do not observe the nature of anything, therefore they are liberated from samsara. As it is said: In the inner and outer self, when the thought of me and mine is exhausted, grasping ceases, and when that is exhausted, birth ceases. Also, if there is no self, how can there be mine? It is said for explanation: Because the agent is without existence, therefore mine does not exist without self. Therefore, seeing the emptiness of self and mine, that yogi will be liberated. Just as without a potter, a pot cannot exist, so without self, mine does not exist. Therefore, since the yogi does not observe me and mine, and does not see samsara, he is liberated. If form, etc., are not observed, then attachment, etc., belonging to it will not arise, therefore the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are established as entering Nirvana without grasping.
